If the Celtics are waiting for the "one trade" that "puts them over the top", it will never happen.

The last time, it took two trades.

If the Celtics make a trade, I want to see either a trade that moves the Celtics forward in the future while keeping enough pieces to make another such trade in the future

or

A small trade that cost minor pieces that improves the team this season without hampering the teams future.

Then there's Russillo who thinks the Celtics trading the 2017 Nets Pick in a deal for Butler should be a NO-BRAINER.

I wouldn't get my hopes up too much but at least he should get rid of Zeller and Amir, they are this team's trade filler and no big moves happen without those two corpses going back to somebody. He could literally trade them for Taj Gibson and call it day, I wouldn't mind.

He is looking at it in a vacuum.   He is not talking about sending Smart, AB and Crowder with it.

Yeah and he acknowledges that the C's still won't be better than CLE or GSW after the trade, but he thinks it doesn't matter and they should still make the trade  ::)

I think you might be underestimating Johnson's value to the team. Sure he is not the same player that he was back in Toronto but he is giving the Celtics defensive effort that would be very difficult to replace.  Zeller, on the the other hand, is more prime for a trade for someone like Gibson.  Add in a protected first round pick and a young prospect like Mickey, I think they'd bite quickly

But they are a step closer.  And if it only costs that draft pick (plus the filler salary), the Celtics would still have the pieces in place to make a 2nd big trade (maybe in the offseason) to close that gap down.

There is not single step.

Us waiting for the next star and Lebron to age out of playing balls to the wall every night to get his team past the next opponent ......why he is crying more more help , so he can rest.

Cavs already paying out the wazoo , with LeBron aging .....something has to give ,  Warriors an't giving the series away this year.  Cavs  can not afford more top 25 players and LeBron can't keep up 40 plus minutes a game for ever.

Irving and Love do not equal a championship without LeBron at full super human strength. They are about the Clippers without Le Whiner

Danny is waiting the deal out ,   Even if we catch LeBron ,  we most likely are still series us underdog to Curry and Durrant

Agreed. Any trade before the deadline, unless it's for a super star (doubtful), should include all of the following:

1) Doesn't trade any of the core 7 (starting five plus Brown and Smart)
2) Contract expires at the end of this year. No salary cap commitments.
3) Protects the BKN and Memphis picks.

If a superstar becomes available, hey, go for it. But if we're gonna trade a core future piece for a body that can't get us out of the East, I'll pass.

I do think the price for Butler will be more.

But if something like 2017BKNPick + Bradley + Zeller + 2019 Clips OR Grizz First + future non-BKN pick does the trick, I would do it.

We can't afford to keep all of IT/Smart/Bradley (only 2 using Bird Rights), so Bradley may be the "odd man out".

IDK, Amir doesn't look like the answer for starting Center on this team, not with Stevens playing him so sparingly and everyone knowing there's a need for a bigger body in the lineup and all our undersized guys are good, just seems natural to point at Amir as where we need the upgrade most.

The "instant gratification" people aren't going to like this one bit.

Isn't this the truth now?:)

Way too many people are playing way too much fantasy [as opposed to real] ball these days as well as posting their ruminations and the results of and lessons learned from their supposed conquests in the endlessly hospitable forum sections of blogs. I'm as guilty as anyone. It's easy to forget that good things take a little longer to come together in the real world.

Here's hoping Danny is wise enough to roll with the current Celtics iteration mostly as is. I see vast amounts of potential for several individuals and thus the team to continue to develop and improve in the process of challenging and possibly surpassing all prevailing expectations, and maybe even shocking the world in the playoffs, at least insofar as the EC is concerned. You don't have to look that hard to see the Cavs are as vulnerable as all outdoors these days and getting more so all the time.

GSW may be a team for the ages and, as Danny sagely indicates, too tough a nut to crack at the moment, no matter what moves anybody makes.

The fear of actually improving this team remains palpable on this board.

No. It is the fear of improving for two months and giving up assets for years without winning a championship.

Agreed.  There is nothing they could do to legitimately threaten GSW.  Let's be honest.  Staying the course and improving without mortgaging the future is the best and smartest move.

The last time, it took two trades.

This is a bit of a fallacy.  It was one trade - the trade for KG - that turned the Cs into title contenders.  The preceding trade for Ray only convinced KG to sign the extension here.  There is no doubt the Cs could have still acquired KG without Ray, but they were not doing that deal unless he extended.

If there is a player out there in a KG-like situation (MVP on a losing franchise with an expiring deal) that required a Ray-like trade to convince him to extend his contract in order for the Celtics to acquire him, there is zero doubt in my mind that Danny would do that.  That situation does not exist and is likely to never happen again.

Rusillo is also a guy who stated that no one on the Cs current roster (IT, Crowder, Bradley, Smart, etc) would start on a contender.
