Could be small or nothing, but it also could signify an upcoming signing or trade.

ESPN's Stein and Windhorst reporting it.

Just them saving luxury tax dollars.  Birdman is out for the year with an ACL.  Let's them sign a free agent PG now or after the deadline.

I kind of am against these trades of injured and retired players. I think the new CBA should adjust this. Mo Williams has been signed multiple times and he is not even playing. Anderson will never play for this team. It feels like a bit of a cheap loophole (especially considering the Celtics were once forced to play a player that had passed away).

Is there any way that Celtics could get MKG?

I think there's some potential there.

The Cleveland Cavaliers traded Chris “Birdman” Andersen to the Charlotte Hornets, the team announced on Monday.

In exchange, Cleveland received a protected second-round draft pick.

Andersen suffered a non-contact injury during a game on Dec. 16. He underwent season-ending surgery for an ACL tear.

This makes no sense.  Charlotte gives up a second round pick for a player that is out for the season?  Why would Charlotte do this?

The pick won't convey. It's top-55 protected.

Charlotte gets cash to cover Birdman's salary, plus another $300k or so for their trouble.

What?  How did they play a dead player?  All I can think of is Weekend at Bernies.
2019 historical draft.  Pick 12

Tim Duncan, Oscar Robertson, Elgin Baylor, Scottie Pippen, Willis Reed, Mitch Richmond, Sam Jones, Dan Majerle, Bob Cousy, Rasheed Wallace, Shawn Kemp, Marcus Camby

It's assuredly top-55 protected.  That's the bare-minimum they're allowed to send.

They got cash in return (some to pay Birdman, some for the favor of reducing the luxury tax bill.)

Cavs save the luxury tax bill that they would have had had they just cut Anderson (which seemed likely).  Makes sense with the cash going to Charlotte.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Bigs - Shaquille O'Neal, Victor Wembanyama
Wings -  Lebron James
Guards - Luka Doncic

If anyone knows this, it will be you.

Why was Charlotte interested in this deal?

Yeah, they get some cash to help Cleveland clear room for a player that can help them this season. Birdman new this was coming, he spoke about it a few days ago.
