It's difficult to evaluate coaches like Doc Rivers and Phil Jackson who must always have championship teams on paper. And then those two thought they could also be GM's. That was their downfall. They were too in love with themselves. They read too many press clippings.
With the way Bradley has improved under Stevens, it makes one wonder how much credit Doc deserves for his development. I remember he worked with him one Summer. I also remember when Avery obviously became better than Ray, Doc didn't have the balls to make the switch, so he played them all. That was when I first learned about the concept of the three guard offense. I didn't like it one bit.
A good team is made up of balancing parts. It's not just pencil in who you think is the best talent or has the most NBA service time.
Doc and Phil like to have guaranteed wins on paper. I have never liked Charles Barkley, but he's correct about Lebron being afraid of competing, and I'd say Doc Rivers is another self-entitled, overrated NBA personality.
Lebron is great, but I call him overrated compared to other historic greats. Michael Jordan was overrated. He got star calls and was sort of a Larry Holmes never having too much competition.
I love pure basketball and that's why I sometimes go after the refs. I think Doc represents a lot of what is wrong with the NBA. I love watching him fail. I would boo Sully and Ray, too, if I could.
Doc got a free ride because we won in 2008. Our team was stacked and should have won it all on paper and we did win in fact. But I'm pretty sure just about any other decent, average coach would have also come out on top.
Bill Simmons used to rip into Doc. Then he went out to Hollywood and started hyping him. That's when I realized Bill Simmons is just anther blowhard. I, too, am a blowhard but am willing to admit it.
