Rumor mill: There are rival executives who believe the Bulls and Celtics will rekindle trade talks centered on Jimmy Butler before the Feb. 23 deadline. The teams held serious talks in June, and the Celtics own the same assets — Jae Crowder, Marcus Smart, the Nets' first-round picks in 2017 and 2018 — the teams discussed then.

Butler could be in line for a five-year, roughly $230 million extension in 2018 that would begin in 2019-20 should he qualify for the designated player exception. Trading a player of Butler's stature typically takes place near the draft, when draft positions are known and projected picks slotted.

But last week's drama and a tough upcoming trip could change the direction of the season and generate internal debate anew.

Interesting that Bradley wasn't included in the "players discussed" as previously rumored.

Thats what kills me. So now that the Bulls obviously arent working, we are going to give up a "mild hit" of a 3rd pick (haters can say what they want, but Brown has looked worthy of a 3rd pick in the minutes he has gotten) and the best odds at the top of a historically deep draft?

Come on guys Ainge isnt stupid.

With Wade and Rondo they don't seem to have room for Bradley.

They won't have Rondo's mouth long.
Coined the CelticsBlog term, "Euromistake."

But last week's drama and a tough upcoming trip could change the direction of the season and generate internal debate anew.
Nick Friedell, who covers the Bulls for ESPN, was on The Lowe Post yesterday saying basically the same thing. He says Chicago's front office is split and half of them don't think Butler can be your #1 guy. Not for basketball reasons, but for personality reasons and they're seeing the drama that's going on there now as confirmation.

If he's available the Celtics have to look into it. But if the Bulls are willing to part with a 27 year old all star you also have to exercise some caution and ask "Why are they willing to give him up?"

Maybe the answer is that they want a king's ransom for him. If that's the case, I guess you still have to think about it but I'm, personally, on the patience bandwagon of making tweaks now to keep the team in competition but really have your eyes on 4 years down the road when Jaylen, Zizic, Yabu, and all these other picks are going to start coming into their own and Avery and Crowder are sage veterans who can still contribute and set up a monster team for a decade.

couple of different threads

Ok, but not a specific thread on it. Regardless, I think this one deserves it's own thread so it doesn't get drowned into general threads on what we can get back for the # 1 pick or what the TNT crew thinks we need. This is much more specific as it relates to rumors of a targeted player.

You have to figure that the package will consist of:

Smart or Rozer
I would prefer to keep Smart. The Bulls had interest in Rozier before the draft and were rumored to draft him if he fell to them.

Crowder or Bradley
I would prefer to keep Crowder. His ultra team friendly deal still has 3 1/2 seasons left on it.

Brown or Nets 2017 pick
This is a really tough choice, as I do love the promise Brown has shown, but also recognize the value of the potential #1 overall pick.

Zeller
Salary filler.

Right now, I'd rather Melo than Butler.

Not for what they can bring and their salary (because Butler beats Melo in both of those categories), but rather what they will cost.

If we can squeeze Melo from Zen without BK picks or any of AB, JC, MS and JB, I'd prefer that. We get to actually compete now and build for the future.

Chi is going to want at least 3 of the above 6 assets. Since Butler plays best at the 2, AB (my favorite C along with Smart right now) is the most logical to give up. If we give up two more of those 6 assets, both our depth and our future are compromised.

Maybe Ainge can leverage Zen by his interest in Butler and maybe he can leverage Chi by his interest in Melo. I trust trade-master Danny.

I posted a link via Roto in the Rumors section this morning. Maybe somebody else did somewhere, too.

It's a big board, and not a bad idea for these links to be posted in multiple sections, since some don't read all the sections.

I read something about a 5/230M contract in '18. That could be a misprint, but I wouldn't pay that kind of money to Butler.

Melo keeps looking better, as stars go, in terms of his contract. At least short term.
IT needs somebody else to shoot the ball. Hard to see him last with that Might Mouse 4Q stuff.
I'm not sure it isn't counterproductive.

In addition, I would prefer Danny keep that Nets 17 pick, which looks like it could be a legitimate #1.

I agree. Besides I think Melo is better offensively, only for this year though. I have no idea what he will be like next year. He could get even fatter than he is this year.
