Kelly Olynyk

I can never shake the feeling that we could have had Giannis Antetokounmpo. Ainge scouted him personally in Greece and just whiffed. It still kills me. Olynyk gets worse every year. Plays scared all the time, seems to be in love with fouling people and simply looks in over his head constantly. He is the type of player that allows people to keep the stereotype going that Boston will take "The White Guy" over other more talented players of color. It is just brutal.

Kelly and Iverson (who didn't make it in the league) are the only white guys Ainge drafted in the last 6 years. I don't know where did you get that stereotype thing.

Kelly hasn't shot well this season but his defense has been great.  He is actually going to get rebounds now.  He is always in position for help defense and his switching on guards has been frankly better defense than most of the guards and forwards.  He contests threes better than anyone on the team and over the last couple games has gotten some legit blocked shots.

Not to mention, even though he is shooting sub-par this season, defending teams bigs HAVE to respect his range. He pulls shot blockers/rebounders outside, opening up the lane for players like Isaiah to do work. Kelly, or someone like Kelly, is essential; Even if he ISN'T shooting all that well currently. A jumpshot is like a golf swing, sometimes you get a hitch and you just cant stop shanking for a while. Eventually you find your groove again.

That draft was not about missing the greek freak as the front office was not looking for a major project.  That was right before they traded garnett and pierce and started the rebuild.  If they had made the trade before the draft then they would have been looking at the greek freak being on the team.  But Olynyk at the time filled a need for an offensive 3pt shooting role player to play next to garnett.  In hindsight it's a shame it didn't work out but who knows maybe the greek freak would have been a bust everywhere except with the Bucks. 

And can we get over this and stop holding it over Kelly.  He is a pretty good player that will be in this league for at least another 5 years.

I agree, but would not take that approach. Let them vent in their own threads (like this one) and not contaminate good threads.

I think I am going to start a JR Giddens/D. Jordan thread once a week and possibly a Gabe Pruitt/Marc Gasol one every now and then. It seems like a reasonable thing to do. The latter misdecision may have indirectly led to us losing a championship. Seems like something legitimate to be upset about.

Yeah, and Wade tearing Rondo's arm out of his socket had nothing to do with it either. Besides, Perk played a whole 17 games for OKC and put up a beastly 5ppg after returning from injury. Clearly he was the missing piece in a big man rotation that included [at the time] a healthy Shaq, J O'Neal, [and then] Krstic.

It's all Ainge's fault for not being able to predict these injuries.

This isn't true at all.  The trade was decided on before the draft, but was pushed off so that some parts of the deal (ie. the Bogans sign and trade) could happen.  Danny made the pick knowing full well that KG, Pierce, and Terry were heading to the Nets

Danny made the choice to take a polished stretch 4/5 instead of an athletic freak that was playing in the Greek 2nd division because he wanted a safe, but not spectacular, player instead of an insanely risky one, not because of fit next to KG

This is largely true.  But I have sometimes wondered if the fit concerns were about Rondo.  At that time, I don't think Ainge had at all decided to move away from Rondo.  And would you rather pair your excellent driving and passing PG with a shaky jump shot with a hyper athletic wing with a shaky jumpshot who some projected would just be a large PG, or with a big who's best skill was his perimeter offensive game?  Especially when you're picking in the middle of the first round where stars are unlikely?
