I'm coming around to the notion of making that pick untouchable.

My only hesistation is if bad teams hang around Brooklyn, come March and April, those teams will be shutting it down while Brooklyn will still be playing at 100% because they have no incentive to lose games. Granted, they aren't capable of many wins and could move Lopez, but you never know.

I think they are making a major mistake by not moving him.  He can get them a 1st round pick (if Korver is worth a late 1st, Brook Lopez is worth a lottery pick).

I think they will deal him, it's just they are holding out a bit hoping they can get a 2017 First Rounder AND another future first rounder.

Teams will get desperate as the deadline approaches so I expect the Nets to get two first round picks for Lopez.

@sross1961 @stevekylerNBA Celtics should keep the picks. Get either Fultz, Smith or Ball this year and could get Ayton 2018.

I've never felt Steve Kyler had a very good feel for either a) the Celtics or b) the quality of college players.

I'd be surprised if Danny keeps both picks myself.

I would not.  Just go back to draft night this years.  Everyone was saying that the Celtics pick was a lock to be traded.  Nothing happened, and Danny came out and laughed at some of the rumors.

They have a process for this stuff, and it is not influenced at all by the fans or the media who clamor for a star.  Danny is sitting on possibly the most valuable trade chip in the entire NBA.  Draft picks have more value than they ever had because of the cap increase.  I would say there is a 30% one pick gets traded.

You may be right about the 30%, but I don't see what your point is about past history. Danny would have traded if there was a trade he liked.

I'd argue that IF Danny wants to contend in the near future, he needs to do a deal. Top talent has become tougher to get in FA because of the intent of the new CBA to help teams retain it (e.g. Cousins). High draft picks are great, but that requires player development and a longer horizon. That may happen because there are no suitable deals, but not because Danny doesn't want to trade this asset or that asset.

Does anyone think there was a promise to Hortford that more was going to happen?

Whether that was to sign Durant or cash in some of our picks.

Obviously Durant effort, but beyond that what could they promise?

To make title contending moves. Can't believe Hortford would sign here,in his prime, to help a couple of lottery picks develop.

  • A true Celtic plays with heart.
If the pick ends up the 1st, wouldn't bat an eyelash to trade for Cousins or George with a promise of resigning extension.

Yep, same here, and the beauty of it is that the #1 pick is such a valuable asset that you wouldn't have to add too much to it to get the deal done.

It sounds like everyone is on the same page. If the pick can bring in an MVP-caliber talent, then you do it. Anything less, hold on to the pick and hope Danny drafts the future of the Celtics.

Meanwhile, the C's have plenty of other assets on the roster, overseas, and in other drafts that can be used (and should be used) to upgrade the current roster.

For cousins, you make that trade a hundred times over.  You make it in a heartbeat.  You get rid of that pick like a hot potato.

What if we traded the 2017 Nets pick but with a top-3 protection.  If it ends up top 3, we instead convey the Nets 2018 pick with no protections.  Is that kind of trade allowed?

I would love for us to land another top 3 talent in the 2017 draft, but understand that we have to give up something of value for a star player, whether that be George, Cousins, or someone else who becomes available at the trade deadline (before we know exactly what the pick will be).

ive read that you cant protect traded picks, but I think its pretty rare for a team to have back to back picks from the same team.

Perhaps I got misinformation.

I would have felt much better if the top 3 picks had wings or bigs in the picture, rather than guards.

I think Danny will trade down, or trade the pick away. Cousins will sign with the Kings for 200 million, but we'll still have a chance to trade for Butler and George.

Same, I wish Giles didn't have his issues with injury, otherwise he would have no doubt been a Top-3 pick and an ideal player for the Celtics to select. Tatum looks great too though.

Fultz and Ball imo are the clear Top-2 picks though still a lot of NCAA season left.

If the Celtics are looking for a premier player those restrictions will never be a part of the deal ... Its way more likely if the pick is traded it would be done in the offseason after the lottery...

If that's the case, only player I could see Ainge trading for is Butler.

PG13 and Cousins are EXPIRING deals in the summer. No way Ainge trades a Top-3 pick + more for an expiring deal.. unless they agreed to a long term commitment beforehand.

As long as the best player on the trade market is Millsap, yes, it is the smart thing to keep the pick.

Butler?  Maybe.

Cousins?  Blake?   Definitely worth hearing the conversation.

This would leave the Cs, Bucks and 76ers as the top of the post Lebron East. If DA plays things correctly we could see many years of deep playoffs runs ahead of us with the team peaking the year lebron retires.
