Would I welcome Millsap? 100% Yes. But not of the cost is Smart.

I think we could build a package around Johnson/Olynyk/Jerebko/Draft Pick.

Atlanta would balk at that and insist Olynyk be replaced by Rozier, We would balk at that. And the draft pick would become Brooklyn 2018 (heck no if they ask for Brooklyn 2017).

I would hesitantly sign off on a package of Johnson/Olynyk/Jerebko/Brooklyn 2018 to give this team a chance to compete this year and next. This trade would be conditional on Millsap opting into player option next year so that we at the minimum get him for 1-1/2 seasons. Which he would never do given he would be highly unlikely to get a max deal in his age 33+ season.

The stars just don't align for this trade...

Smart has the second highest plus minus on the team, behind Crowder.

This thread is ridiculous. For those saying yes, I can't even fathom why. No way you trade a cost controlled, up and coming franchise type player, whose worth is equal on the court as it in the locker room, for a 32 year old expiring contract, free agent to be.

Ludicrous...

What's ludicrous is your indoctrination of Smart as a franchise player. Let's have him shoot above 35% from the field over a full season before we even assume he has that potential. Smart is a role player and Paul Millsap is the perfect player for Stevens system and a top PF in the league. I don't care if Millsap is expiring or 32, he's a lot better player than Smart at a position that we need tons of help at. Smart is a free agent next year anyways and I can almost guarantee you that anything that he would demand on the market is more than he is worth.
Not only that, but we have a high draft pick in a strong point guard draft where we could potentially land an elite point guard prospect.

Well a lot of value is placed on Smart's work ethic and age, but I do think that milsap is pretty overrated. Although his value is higher than Smart's atm, we do need a guy like Smart more than Milsap (the PF we need is a young Ibaka/Faried type of PF,not Paul Milsap while Smart fills mutiple positions from 1 to 3)

Faried is not a good fit because he's not a shooter or a shotblocker. How is Millsap overrated? He can guard 1-4, he can play 3/4, he can be a go-to scorer in spurts, he hits the 3, he's a good defender, he can pass the ball, he can do just about anything you need on the basketball court.

Despite the unbelievable Celtics bias, there is no GM in the league that wouldn't trade Millsap for Smart straight up.

What is so enticing about Smart?!?  I don't get it. Yes he plays winning basketball, but so does Millsap and he puts up the wins/stats to prove it!!!

The only player that's drastically overrated in this situation is Smart. You said that Millsap was overrated how?

Get Noel.
We might as well if we are trying to trade for an expiring deal because at least we will have the ability to match his contract

Yes to Noel.  The sixers can't keep Embiid, Okafor, Noel and Simmons.  I just hope they would trade him to us and probably would be steep.  He'd fit here really well though.  Amir is good but gets destroyed down low at times.

Noel starting with Horford would be fun.

We already know that Horford+Millsap is not a championship core.  It gives you a solid team, but I don't feel it takes you to that next step where you have a chance of beating Cleveland or Golden State.  If we move Smart, it should be in a big deal.  Not for an incremental upgrade.

Smart is ranked 151st in the NBA in Real Plus Minus

Millsap is ranked 14th in the NBA in Real Plus Minus...

I'd say that's a pretty major upgrade.

No one is saying that adding Millsap makes a Boston a legit contender, but Smart doesn't either and adding Millsap gets Boston a lot closer.  Close enough that one move might actually make Boston a contender.  If the price for Millsap is something like Zeller, Smart, Jerekbo, and Boston's 2018 1st then Boston has to make that trade.

Millsap would be Boston's best player.  He fills a real need.  Yes he can opt out of his contract, but there is a good chance that he would like being in Boston and would re-sign.  I think that is worth the risk for a backup guard who is a horrible offensive player and not even the best wing defender on the team (that is still Bradley).
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

No.

The trade would basically be Amir + Marcus for Millsap.  The Celtics get better in the short term, but basically give up a chance to go after a big name FA in the offseason (other than extending Millsap).
Celtics fan for life.
