No Hunter But no Green.

I am amazed that we give up Hunter a promising young player for a vet because he was ready to play this year but Green rides the pine. I am thankful the minutes go to brown but if you are not going to play green why cut Hunter. Green would have been picked up by another team if cut and we would have a promising second year player to trade for a wing if need be down the line. Hopefully Green will shows is worth but today I just don't get it the move.

Miami pretty much found out the same thing about Green, Boston seems to have this year. He's not the same player he was with Phoenix. Apparently, that was peak Gerald Green.

He's just not reliable to do anything else at a plus level if he isn't scoring. When you consider his age, there's just no upside to giving him minutes. Probably a wasted signing, but we'll see, maybe he eventually finds himself getting minutes due to injuries to others.

My initial hunch is that Brad is using what will eventually be Green's minutes in order to showcase guys like Rozier, Brown, Jerebko, Amir, and Zeller early in the season.

I could see us making a small trade with those guys and/or first round picks (plus Young and Mickey), or I could see us making a larger trade involving Bradley/Smart/Crowder.  In either case Green would be a huge asset filling those leftover minutes (much better than Hunter at least).

His defensive rotations seem on, so I don't think that's why he was benched.

I have faith that Gerald can help this team.  I think his dunks (along with Jaylen's) can give our team that spark/momentum we need to keep going and stop those scoring slumps.

I think a lineup with Smart, Green, Brown, Crowder/Bradley, and Horford/Kelly would be very long and tough defensively, while relentlessly aggressive offensively (as opposed to the passive pass around the perimeter and don't attack mentality the 2nd unit's been getting from Jerebko, Rozier, Amir, and Zeller).

I wouldn't be surprised to see Green string together a dozen DNP-CD's and then score 15 points in 20 minutes that helps the C's win a game. He might not be an every day player anymore but he's still got the talent to pop off for a big game once in a while.

I guess the question is, did Hunter have that potential as well?

stevens said his early season injury and missing half of training camp has put him behind and that he still has faith in him
green has had a few nice assists to bigs  but has failed to get out in transition-
i believe rj does not have a nba body he has yet tp perform at chicgo and shot for lousy percentage at windy city  d league-
-the guy to watch is nader-size length, hits the three and has 7-1 wingspan
also his left hand off glass can't tell from right,good first step
its a long season and he is a pro-

we would have had to guarantee his contract for next season, a spot that would be filled by this years brooklyn pick or maybe Yabs/Zizic. Didn't crunch the numbers but that extra few million that we would have paid RJ next season might mean the difference in being able to sign a max contract player in the off season.
then again we could have just not guaranteed him, and had him on the roster. But that would also present a cap hold because he would be a RFA.

He didn't have to pick up Hunter's option for next year. Not picking it up would have defeated the purpose of keeping him (since you'd be keeping him for his potential, not year one ability), but we wouldn't need to

Agree, Hunter is not promising.  I'm not even sure if he's an NBA player.  Green isn't very good but at least he is an NBA player who can go on the occasional offensive burst.  If the goal is to win games, I'd rather have Green than waste time on the next Allen Ray.

I wouldn't be surprised to see greens' minutes increase in the 2nd half and browns' decrease in the 2nd half of the season. while brown has been better than expected I suspect if green starts to come along brad will go with the vet more heading into the playoffs.

plus brown really hasn't done much since the Cleveland game. seems teams are pretty much leaving him and daring him to shoot at this point.

This whole post raises a very minor point. At the end of the day, neither player will likely be of enormous consequence to us. But as others have pointed out, I think it's likelier that Green wins us a couple games than it is that Hunter will ever amount to anything we'all regret passing on.

I'd definitely take issue with the promising part.  Maybe he finds his groove with a team he fits perfectly with but I doubt it.  The thing is, even if we kept Hunter this year, we'd have to get rid of him next year because we will again be in a roster crunch if Zizic comes to the NBA and we draft a player in the lottery again.
