We got a good rotation player in a historically bad draft. Yeah, Danny missed on Giannis, but so did 14 other GM's, and many of them are unable to fall back on the fact that they got a good rotation player in 2013.

I would argue 29 GM's missed on Giannis.  That draft was considered so weak that any team could have traded into the top 14 if they had an inkling to how good Giannis would become.  Even the Bucks would have traded up to make sure they got him.

For all those claiming they wanted us to choose the Freak, please re-post your pre-draft posts stating that. I suspect most of you are sharing hindsight rather than foresight.

No can do.  Didn't start posting until late 2014.  DraftExpress mock had Giannis going in the middle 1st.  There was lots of talk about the Greek Freak at that time.  It shouldn't be surprising that a lot of people wanted Giannis then.  Ainge's trading up to get KO was the worst part.  Thought for sure it was to get Giannis.

I was on the Adams train for the 2013 draft.  I really thought what we needed was a hard nosed, defensive minded, rebounding center.  I liked his physical profile and his toughness.   After that, I liked Plumlee and then Dieng.  I was intrigued by Giannis, but didn't want Danny to take the risk.  Thought Gobert was too skinny and gangly.

Kelly was on my radar, but I couldn't commit to him.  I still think he's ridiculously talented.  He may never develop the mental and physical toughness he needs to reach his very high ceiling, but I feel like picking him was worth the risk.

I'd argue that the thought process that went into taking Olynyk over Giannis is the same thought process that led to taking Brown over Bender this summer.

That Ainge didn't get the best player possible at that spot does not mean it was a bad pick.  Trading up to take Olynyk was better than not making a move and taking someone at the Celtics' original spot.  Don't criticize Ainge for not hitting a home run when he hit a solid double down the line.

About 25 teams passed on IT in 2011.

Almost 20 teams passed on AB.

Lets fire all those GMs.  ::)

The Nets will finish with the worst record and the Celtics will end up with the 4th pick.

And we should have taken Butler, D Jordan, and M Gasol, as well  ::)

Be happy we walked away with a decent rotation player in that draft at 13. If the Cavs had not signed Lebron for free, they would still be sucking it up with Anthony Bennett getting spot minutes off the bench.

There were some good players taken in that draft, but not a lot of great ones. We can consider ourselves lucky to have gotten one of those good ones.

Yes danny needs to hit on 11 out of every 10 draft picks he makes. Fire him!

I hated the Olynyk pick when we made it, but It wasn't the terrible pick I thought it was. Still, I will forever believe Giannis was the clear cut BPA (for us atleast) when we were on the board. Young long super athlete with some guard skills vs super polished college senior with short arms and negative athleticism. Giannis was risky considering he was coming from europe, but he made more sense for a rebuilding team.

"Negative athleticism" is false.  "The bounce is real."

Also, Giannis wasn't just "coming from Europe," he was straight out of the Greek second division.  It's like he was playing against part time plumbers who have side gigs playing a little hoops.  Yeah, if you could make out which one was Giannis in the grainy IPhone videos that were circulating, sure, there was something impressive there, but he was a big, big risk.  It's not we were looking at a guy playing major minutes for a top ACB team in the EuroCup or something, or even a guy out of the flashy, developmental Adriatic League.

Kelly is a pretty bad athletically and those t-rex arms matched with the weak frame don't help him.

Danny scouted Giannis and compared him to Pippen, if anything he might have started the hype around him.

It was risky, but the pay out potential was significant compared to the near finish project which was Olynyk.

That's convenient.

Then can you show me all the threads in this Blog touting him before the draft that year??  Would be surprised if there was more than 1 or 2 if any.

Then compare that with the number of threads for Smart. Or Gordon. Or Bender.

Giannis had a very low probability of becoming as good as he has become, but now that he is this good a lot of people act like they knew it would happen.  They didn't know.

Kelly may be a little soft and injury prone but he's very nice player when healthy, a good use of the 13th pick.  An argument can be made that Kelly is the both the Celtics best shooter AND passer.  That's a pretty good combo.

My post was so good you quoted it twice?  Kelly does have short arms, but he runs well and has a bit of "ups."  Plus, he's very nimble for a seven footer.

Yeah, Danny did scout Giannis.  In the end, he decided it wasn't worth the risk.  Of course, I would love to have Danny jump in the Delorean with the flux capacitor and go back to the summer of 2013 and nab Giannis.  However, given the impossibility of that scenario, I respect his decision to take Kelly.

I do love how everyone always "knew all along" after the fact.

TP to you sir!

It's so easy to judge a decision in hindsight. If someone was saying Giannis before the draft then you can question DA's performance, if you are just cherry picking years later then you should be quiet.

As to Olynyk, he's a top 10 (maybe top 5) player in his class that was drafted with the 13th pick. He has exceeded his pick slot, anytime Danny picks a guy that does that I will be happy.
