The difference is that Green has already proven he can play (and score) consistently in this league.  Hunter and Young have not.

Green has proven nothing.
He signed a minimum contract as a player on the way out.

TP

Green is 30 and this is the EIGHTH time he's switched teams.

It's incredibly unlikely he's the difference between us winning the title or not. I'd rather keep an extra prospect like Hunter/Young than keep Green.

Green can be relied on all season long and in the playoffs to provide scoring off the bench and reasonable defense. Young and Hunter can't yet. That alone could be the difference in a playoff series.

When has Green ever helped a team win anything? Rather roll with guys we drafted than mercenaries who add little to the equation.

I just don't see Green moving the needle much. Hence why he's earning only minimum salary in an offseason in which teams had more money than ever to spend with an exploding salary cap.

You can't still be in the league at age 30 if you can't play.  Last year he was giving Miami 10 pts a game off the bench till they decided to give Winslow his minutes.  Both years prior he was a double figure scorer in Phoenix - nearly 16 ppg in 2013.  That year he shot 40% from 3 pt range and whenever he gets regular minutes he can make the 3 consistently.  Phoenix style is a lot more like the Celtics than Miami.

Did you watch the Atlanta series in May once Bradley went down?  Green will win some games for them this season.

Green has been coming off a hip injury so his play as of late doesn't concern me.  What concerns me is that he hasn't had the cleanest bill of health in the last couple seasons.  The hip flexor injury is probably gonna be more chronic than the one time deal.  Besides his microwave tendencies on offense, he isn't that great on defense and my main qualm with him remaining on the team is:  He isn't gonna be in the top 9 that get consistent minutes.  Thomas, Smart, Crowder, Bradley, Brown, Horford, Olynyk, Johnson, Jerebko, Rozier are all more likely to get more minutes.  If Green can't get on the floor to score, how is he worth keeping on the team? insurance? If he is on the team, he takes away from the development of our younger talents and the few minutes that they are gonna get to increase their trade value/ basketball skills.  So why keep him? just remember no one wanted him last summer until we found him in the recycle bin...

Green wasn't very good last year, and hasn't been good in the preseason.  Of course we don't see what happens in practice, but based on what I've seen I'd have no problem cutting him.

He has been better than either of them have for sure.

It's not even worth discussing.  He is not getting cut.

  • Peace it's a board. We all will never agree.
Maybe Smart will go Disable List for 2 weeks and we keep both until then. Green could be traded. Minny and Chicago could use a guy like him. They have no shooters.

I has the same reaction a few days ago, no.  However, I am starting to change my thinking.  Recognize that DA will have to give up something by Monday without anything in return (barring a trade).  Should that be a young player with potential to develop further, or a 30-year old who, though proven he can play in the NBA, has shown to not be the sharpshooter we hoped for and who does not have a real future with the team?

What do Hunter and Young have that we would keep them? At least, Green has more experience, he can shoot and he can attack the rim. For a bench player, fair enough. Hard to say, but R.J. and Young are not NBA players.
Anyway, senseless topic.

Hunter and Young can't even be in the conversation with Gerald Green right now. They are miles apart.

Green will actually play this year. Even if Young/Hunter were to make the team they will still barely play. Green right now is probably the ceiling for either player to ever reach in their careers.
