I won't lie, as a cal alum I was particularly excited when the celts drafted jaylen brown.  I think everything that's been said about him is true.  He's athletic but still raw from a team basketball perspective.  But man does this kid ooze potential.  And not just everything day all star potential.  I mean hall of fame potential.  His speed, explosiveness, quick-twitchyness is off the charts.

By the time all is said and done all the moaning we heard when he was drafted, and there was a lot of it, will be a long forgotten memory.

Having watched all of the Summer League and preseason games, Brown's body, size, and athleticism remind me of Jordan. The similarities end there, but hopefully Jaylen can match an iota of the competitive and driven mentality that Jordan possessed. That alone would facilitate a successful future for Brown.
You are no longer black, or brown, or yellow, or red! You are now GREEN, you are light GREEN, or dark GREEN!

Those are big words, I'm excited too and hope you're right. Looking forward to seeing him in real games against better talent. Lets get him regular rotation minutes before we bring him to Springfield hehehe.

I have become quite enamored with him also. I was pretty disappointed when Ainge picked him on draft night. However, the kid has literally done nothing wrong since then. He gets an A+ for his personality and media sound bites. He gets an A+ for athleticism. His passing is miles ahead of where I thought it was when he was drafted.

Leading up to the draft, he looked like an athlete, not a basketball player. Honestly now he looks like an athletic basketball player. His penchant for striving to make the right basketball play has really stood out to me. I really hope he continues this in the regular season.

I am pretty confident his finishing will come around. His handles and footwork show he is pretty coordinated, and getting to the rim is no problem for him. In my opinion, lack of coordination, or lack of athleticism tend to be the leading causes of poor percentages at the rim. And luckily for us, Jaylen has neither. Im guessing that at this stage it is a mental thing in terms of finishing around the hoop.

The hall of fame talk is a bit soon for my taste, but Jaylen has truly made me believe that he could one day be the best player on our team. Granted this will take some time, but unless we trade for Boogie, or draft a surefire superstar with this years pick, Brown could one day be that cornerstone for us.

yea, I loved the dude when we first drafted him and still do. But I agree with you on the point of finishing, I saw during summer leagues sometimes he couldn't finish around the rim when there was some contact, I saw the improvement in the preseason though! His body is definitely NBA ready but I would assume adding 10 lbs of muscle would do him some good, at least for finishing imo

I would say that his percentages in the summer league were pulled down a bit by his minor injury, and the no basketball style that occurs in SL. As of 10/19 he is averaging 9.7 pts in 22.7 mpg on 44% from the field in preseason. That is a step forward from SL against better competition than he was up against in SL. If he can continue roughly 10 ppg off the bench on 44% from the field, that would be an amazing rookie year for him. That would give him per36 of what? 15.4ppg and 4.4 rpg? That would be awesome.

Adding 10 pounds of muscle between now and his prime would make him a physical force. 6'7 and 235 pounds with a 7' wingspan is the perfect mold for that slashing sg/sf/pf. If he tightens his handle up a bit who could stop that going to the rim? It will be absurd.

As has been alluded to, finishing is crucial. If he can become an excellent finisher, his motor and athleticism will make him one heck of a player. I feel like defense will be easy due to his combination of athleticism, brains, and effort.

What would then bring him to the next level is the midrange game or deeper.

Another way to become a superstar is footwork. People like Harden and Ginobili use that so well. Pierce had great footwork. Pierce and Harden also aren't particularly fast. Fast jumpers often don't take the time to polish their footwork. If you can finish at full speed like Westbrook, I suppose you don't need footwork. But getting to the elite level will require some more tools that can't be assumed to be part of a normal development curve.

absolutely agree with you, I don't think a 10 lb gain would slow him down at all in my opinion. I think his shot is good too, right out I think his shot is better than Smart's. If he keeps developing with his defense and his shots % goes up, I think he can potentially post all-star stats.

This is literally me. Like, word for word, exactly my thought process too.
I could very well see the Hawks... starting Taurean Prince at the 3, who is already better than Crowder, imo.

you vs. the guy she tells you not to worry about

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
Just amazing that he's only 19 years old.
He's potentially still growing too.

He's tightened up his handle, his jumpshot, and his passing and awareness appear much better than first anticipated.

I think Ainge really binked the Rozier pick and Jaylen looks good so far.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

I wanted him in green before the draft.  Loved his physical profile, his mental acuity, and his projectable skills.

I can't lie though I was kind of nervous when it was documented that he was "off the charts bad" in an analytical sense.

"The University of California’s Brown is one of the battleground prospects. Scouts love him, and Chad Ford’s latest mock draft has him going No. 8 overall, to the Sacramento Kings. Meanwhile, ESPN’s Kevin Pelton projects he’ll produce negative 0.5 Wins Above Replacement Player, or WARP, which ranks 101st among all prospects."

I was hoping that he didn't shine at Cal due to coaching, system, and execution...and so far that seems to be the case.

I think he could POTENTIALLY be one of the all-time Celtics.

Just curious, I know it's very early on, but would anyone here trade Jaylen for Ingram right now?

Considering he general dissapointment most people here had when we got pick #3 instead of #2, it doesn't look so bad in hindsight.

Welcome to the bandwagon.  I've been touting him as the player for the c's for a long long time.

From my observsations:

His athleticism + some muscle he will soon add almost naturaly (remember he is still only 19) will put him among the superstar type players. That alone does allow him to dominate all the missmatches on the court easily. Even at this time he has shown that on drives and in a couple of postup situations allready.

His Offence:

On offence he is very versatile. When Green was a rook pretty much all he could do is dunk the ball. JB can do that, but he is also very very skilled in the post, he can hit open 3s and draw foules. If he improofes his shooting every year like AB did he can become an All Star easily. Unlike AB he doesnt have to overcome limitations on Offence that come along with beeing untersized. He is a willing and allready pretty good passer.

On Defense:

His D is pretty good allready. He is good in one-on-one situations and has shown that he can protect the rim with his ability to jump and his quickness. He still has to learn not to jump after every shot and not to fall for every shot fake because thats what ppl will try to do to him as a rookie. The recent Knicks and Nets games have shown that. Ppl went at him a lot in those games. Carmello went at him as the rookie and gave him a free lesson. In the last game he also looked lost in the D at times. One was able to see the Imapct it made on him in his face. If he is really as smart as people say he will have learned a lot of things and will know that he has to work hard to even get a climpse on the level Smart, AB and JC have reached on that side of the ball, plus he has those guys to learn from.

Summary:

Jahlen has the physical tools to become a superstar type player, he just has to stay healthy. He is very raw still but he has shown glimpses of what he might become in allmost every game so far. People say he is a quickl learner and hard worker so provided his shooting comes around there is no reason for him not to become a superstar. He was drafted in a high motor team, a team with ambitions to at least progress further than round 1 of the playoffs, a team with a quallity starting 5 and possible the deepest bench in the NBA. The last 2 years have teached those guys that even with AH they still lack a superstar like DC but they also know that as a team they were able to overperform 2 seasons in a row. They know that in order to do that they need each and every guy on the team so they really work hard togather. They have recognized that JB allready can help the team on the court and that he is making good decisions. Given that he will not only get playing time, he will have quality vets to learn from who actually have a intrest to make him better and he also will have a good amount of competion for minutes. He might not become ROTY but he will most likely be at the All-Star weekend as one of the best of that rookie class. If he somehow is able to dupplicate the dramatic improofment of Rozier he could very well become 2nd year player of the year next season and give Crowder a real competion for his starter spot. Chances for JB to become another Jeff Green are very slim imo - he allways seems to be attacking the rim when he has the chance to.

AB is praising him too in this recent article on:
http://www.nba.com/celtics/news/sidebar/prac-101816-veterans-say-brown-perfect-piece-for-celtics

He allready made some waves around the NBA. People talk about him and media asks his teammates about him. They all have seen those glimpses and have given praise therefore my observations can't be too far off. Lets hope he stays healthy and does develop quickly into the next big thing.

I think it's way too early to say. I will say that if Ingram's jumper was actually a mirage at Duke, then he's a much less interesting prospect.
Isaiah, you were lightning in a bottle.
