They were giving him short odds early. I understood, there were some concerns about his game, and more importantly a crowded Celtics team that might not have minutes for him. The two drafted before him? Simmons is out for quite a while and Ingram was always going to be a project. Beyond that you have Dunn, Hield, and Murray. Hield and Murray will start their NBA lives as 3 and D molds. That leaves Dunn aand Brown to duke it out for ROTY imho. Simmons could come back strong, Ingram could find a niche and impress early. There are also other dark horses. But after summer league and this preseason this kid is most likely 7th man. I think he will get 20ish minutes a game. Enough time to show the flash that has made him so entertaining in preseason. I think if he can have a line like 12, 5, 4 he's well on his way. Weigh in \/

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Crowder would have to get injured for the entire season and Brad would have to have more trust in Jaylen to start at the 3 than Smart or Green for there to even be a chance. I love his game and can see his potential bursting through, but ROTYs typically need to be getting lots of minutes on bad teams to have a chance. Like it or not, it's a stats league...and not the per 36 kind, especially when it comes to these types of awards.

Embiid hasn't played any NBA games so this is considered his rookie season.  Assuming he stays healthy, I'd say he would be the front runner and it would take significantly more than 12/5/4 to beat him out.

I think he would have a hard time based on role/production.  I am very excited though.

Embiid or Chriss got my vote.

He's played far better in preseason than anyone reasonably hoped.  That would be great if it carried over into the regular season.

I'd say Chriss, Hield, and Embiid are the favorites. Chriss has looked impressive and should play a ton, putting up nice numbers. Hield's going to score a lot. Embiid is just...[dang]. It'll be interesting to see how the voters value team success this year, because it's typically not a big factor. Say we win 55 games and Jaylen puts up 11/4/2, would Jaylen be rewarded for his team's achievements? Would he beat out Chriss with 13/8/1 or Hield with 16/3/1 or Embiid with 14/9/1? It's a very interesting question. Personally, I think the winning locks him into an All-Rookie spot, but I'd doubt he gets ROY.

Edit: Murray is very much in the running as well. He's looked very good and should get a lot of time with Harris out.

I still think Dunn figures it out sooner than later, so he should have fairly good odds too. Once Embiid gets off his minutes and games restriction though, it really shouldnt be a contest.
I could very well see the Hawks... starting Taurean Prince at the 3, who is already better than Crowder, imo.

you vs. the guy she tells you not to worry about

Agreed. Jaylen looks good, though. Care a lot less re: passing on Dunn.

I was thinking he has no chance since he's not playing enough minutes but when I look at the rookies there's no one that stands out.

Ben Simmons is injured, Brandon Ingram is very raw. It will probably be Kris Dunn. Brown has an outside chance.

Wow Simmons out for 3 months.  The Sixers have no luck with their top picks and injuries do they?  LOL.  Feel bad for them.

Honestly, It's hard to see JB getting enough minutes to win ROTY honors.  Would love it if he could be at least in the running though, that would mean that he was doing some positive things on the floor.

Embiid is rookie eligible and will have a good chance if he's healthy.  Hield also will get plenty of opportunities.

He may prove to have the talent, but as others have said, he likely won't get the time and touches on this team to win it.

I think Hield is in the best position for it.

With both Holiday & Evans out, he'll get big minutes right away & have the chance to really get his confidence & 3pt shot percolating.  I wouldn't be surprise to see he & Davis lead that team back into the playoffs this year.  I'll definitely be drafting Buddy in fantasy...

Brown, on the other hand, will have to be sensational enough to take Crowder's starting job.
If that happens, it'll be hard to deny him the ROY if he's contributing that much to a 50 win team.
