  • Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...
RJ is out performing Young, but I still feel it's way to early to give up on Young.

Young is only a year and some change older than Brown and I'm seeing some legit progress.

I honestly am starting to think the odd man out is Zeller. He's the only one who has looked pretty bad over the course of this pre-season.
You may be right, but it won't happen. He is signed and we need him for front court depth.

Honestly I'm not too sure about this. If we lose one of our core 4 bigs, I see Brad going smaller on the court.

Cutting Zeller now would be the zenith of stupidity.

Gotta be RJ and Bentil.

Remember last year when people were saying RJ would probably have a better career than Rozier? Yeah, good times lol

RJ played fantastic today. I think he plays a lot better when he's a ball handler, he knows how to use screens well. He's also a decent passer. I don't know how you can come away from tonight's game and say its "gotta" be RJ. Bentil, yeah i agree. but RJ may have saved his spot tonight.
I could very well see the Hawks... starting Taurean Prince at the 3, who is already better than Crowder, imo.

you vs. the guy she tells you not to worry about

RJ's not getting cut.  Ainge seems committed, longstanding relationship with Brad, high BBIQ, offensive upside, elevates his game when playing with better players... he's sticking around. Has to be Bentil and Young, though imho Mickey should be in consideration as well.

It sucks because we lack a little bit of depth in bigs... otherwise Mickey over Young to be cut has to be in play.

Agreed, even a skilled player like Zeller is more miss than hit.  But I have faith in a healthy Amir, Jerebko, and KO upon return.  Horford may make a considerable difference, too -- if healthy, he's as reliable as it gets.  Man, we haven't had a big hitting outside jumpers with his consistency in a long time.

Back on topic, it seems that one of RJ/Young would be cut given neither have looked great and project to play the same position (overseas... half kidding).  But I honestly never understood the fascination with Mickey.  He was a fine college player, but all of his red flags have carried over to the NBA -- he had trouble defending in space against guards, lacks the size to bang in the post, and his offensive contributions are nowhere near NBA level.  If he can't carve out a significant role on defense, I just don't understand the hype.

I never understood the fascination with Mickey either. I guess he had a decent Summer League last year and put up some good defensive numbers in the D-League, I don't really recall. I always thought there was a reason why Brad Stevens would not give him some burn last season. Other people thought Brad Stevens liked burying him just because.

The Celtics are slated to be a very talented team in the next year or two. Letting go of either one of Young or Hunter, even if they do turn out to be a stud on some other team, won't be a huge loss. What hurts me a little is that one of them has to be let go while Zeller, and to a lesser extent Mickey, takes a roster spot due to the positional depth rather than possible production.

As for which of the two gets to stay, it's hard. Young looks like he just can't put it together, and Hunter has looked like he doesn't have enough to compete at this level. I think over the course of a season, their level of production will be the same (stinking it up for some games and making some decent plays in some others). For the team, cutting either will likely yield the same results. It just comes down to who they like better.

I honestly agree, a primary reason it's frustrating is because Young and Hunter have shown glimpses this summer.  And because of that, I'm wanting to give them both an opportunity -- one may bring out the best in the other. Cut Mickey and we get to find out, though.

Solid performance by RJ against the Knicks 3rd stringers, I doubt he will get cut now after considering that Stevens probably trusts him more (playoffs minutes last year), and is a more engaged and complete player than Young.

However both Young and RJ foul at an alarming rate, because their defense just isn't good. RJ needs to get quicker footspeed to guard SG's and the PnR, and add more strength to guard SF's.  He had 4 fouls in 9mins against the Nets a few days ago. Since we have Brown these guys won't matter much for now anyway.
