Hayward or Jaylen, hmmm

Not to sound offensive, just stating my honest opinion, but my god, I think Jaylen Brown is going to be something special.

And didn't the article state that Hayward would join the Celtics in the off-season? Adding Hayward would be simply amazing, because it would help us run so many small ball options. Hayward at the 2, Crowder at the 3, Brown or Crowder at the 4, with Horford as a small ball 5. I think we need more ball handling, and more shooting, and viola Hayward can do that. Only issue as brought by users is the cost of the contract, and whether or not he's

He's missing the handles, and the 3pt shot stroke to truly become an excellent two way player. His shot is iffy, yes I would have to agree with anyone on that, but simply put; there is so much potential in this guy.

His motor is incredibly high, and at worst case could be a bigger verison of Smart, with maybe more free throw attempts.

It still gives us plenty of assets to use to bring in another superstar, or pieces that we're missing.

Another wrinkle is that Avery's and IT's extension deadline will be about 2 weeks after he makes his FA decision. If Hayward signs ( a max or near max), we could probably only afford to extend one  of them (ignoring of course if another FA or Kelly signs a big deal). That would mean the other would need to use Bird Rights and stay in Boston. Unlike Al Horford did with Atlanta.

If Hayward signs, neither IT nor Avery will be extended, unless there is a significant change to the CBA.

Why not? We'll have cap space no?

No, we would not have the cap space.  We don't technically have the space for Hayward as is, although it won't be a hard lift to create it.  To create the $10-15 million extra required for an extension after signing Hayward, however, would require a significant move.

but i thought if you time the transactions right (like, do them in a certain order), you can keep your players and sign other guys to the cap? doesnt that apply here?

edit: yeah what monkhouse said. cant we sign them with bird rights? and do something with our transaction order/timing?

Even more than that I think..

Even if Kelly signs a 15m deal for 17-18, Hayward signs for 22m, we would still have cap space after Zeller comes off the books, and Jonas' and Amir's cap holds are waived to extend one under the cap. Then the other one can be offered a new deal with Bird rights..

Only cap hits (that will likely obtain) for 17-18 so far Horford, Crowder, Terry, Marcus, Jaylen. All others can be waived (like, for instance, Mickey)

Extensions need to be using cap space not bird rights. Getting Hayward would use all our cap space. We could then re-sign any FAs that we have using bird rights, assuming we haven't had to get rid of them to make the cap room in the first place
