Was reading an article about players off seasons and I saw this bit about Jaylen's training.

SI: And you also have a guy like Jaylen Brown, who’s never played a game. What do you end up working on with him?

Johnson: For a kid like Jaylen, it's footwork. Balance. His ability to play off the catch. His ability to get into an attack position and score efficiently off of one and two dribbles. You don't get a bunch of dribbles in the NBA. I also feel like Jaylen has an opportunity to be able to have a deadly mid-post game. Like other big guards—right now Jimmy is really deadly on his mid-post game.

SI: But the footwork is step one.

Johnson: Exactly. We're not trying to get good at everything. We're focused on a couple things, and footwork is the basic that I'm really focused on. That applies in the post, the mid-post, pick-and-roll, the shooting. Once you've got footwork and balance, and ball-handling, you can get anywhere on the floor.

SI: But what about his role on the Celtics? How do you guys plan for something that hasn't happened yet?

Johnson: We break it down. Boston, I don't want to put it all out there, but you know they they drive in the slots. They're a hard slot-driving team. We need him comfortable in the pick-and-roll, whether it's side pick-and-roll, angle pick-and-roll, or slot pick-and-roll. We need him making corner threes. We take the concepts of what Boston already has in place, and I build that into Jaylen's sessions. So by the time he gets to training camp, he's very familiar with not only the positions that they're going to put him in, but he's got moves and counters that will make him more comfortable as an offensive player.

SI: How much are you talking to the Celtics through this process?

Johnson: They came out and spent a whole week with Jaylen and I. And we worked together on his development. [Teams] all come out. Now, that doesn't happen for a guy who's just trying to make a roster. That happens for the elite guys. They'll give you whatever you need to make sure that player is ready.

SI: Were you in touch with Brad Stevens?

Johnson: I've spoken to everybody around Brad, but I haven't seen Brad yet. But me and Jaylen discuss what Brad's told him. And the other coaches came out, so we saw them.

I always take what trainers say with a grain of salt.  I mean if they insult the guy they are training or come down on him will they have a job training them?   Most likely not.

I read that article as well.
It's really encouraging to hear that Jaylen is putting in the time, effort, commitment to be the best player that he can be.

He's only 19 years old, but if he continues to hone his craft and improve every single year, well he could turn out real special.

And what better training partner than Jimmy Butler?  The guy turned himself from a late 1st round pick, perceived as mostly a defensive guy, into a bona fide all-star player.

What impresses me, is not the hype of hiring a famous trainer, it's Brown being pro-active in seeking self-improvement.  He's not just saying he wants to be the best, he's taking steps to do it, he's training, he's growing, he's seeking others better than him so he can polish his skills.

Those are great signs.  And I really hope he turns into a great player for us.  This is great news for an otherwise slow basketball off-season.

Ugh.  Another Sullinger's offseason weight-loss type hype.  If anything this is a bad omen.  Just trade this guy for Okafor already and be done with it.  That's if they even want him.

I always said when I left the Celtics, I could not go to heaven, because that would
be a step down. I am pure 100 percent Celtic. I think if you slashed my wrists, my

If you're comparing Sully to Jaylen, you're doing something wrong.
I could very well see the Hawks... starting Taurean Prince at the 3, who is already better than Crowder, imo.

you vs. the guy she tells you not to worry about

LOL, are you serious?  Jaylen has more work ethic, athleticism, and desire in one pinky finger than Sullinger has in his entire 280+ lbs body.

Agreed. They will have very different paths to be sure.

he isn't going to badmouth them but he is telling it like it is with his lesser clients. that was a good read. especially how and what he works on depending on the player's skill level. role players work on role player things and 15th/thread man works on things to keep them on the team.

young could use a trainer like this, get him focused on working on a couple things every offseason instead of trying to fix it all at once. If Young could score, he would get some minutes. It's not like we don't play poor defenders, IT4 is a major player. If Young could shoot the 3 at 35% and try on defense he would get 10mins a game but he is terrible on D and hasn't found his stroke at any time in the big league (okay 1 game). I won't say its his trainer, like the guy said, you gotta work.

I think too many guys come up short because they don't accept just working at being a role player when they see being more isn't working out. go focus on shooting/making corner 3s and get good at that and take it a step at a time. SMH, no one wants to be Horry even though he has rings on rings.
It takes me 3hrs to get to Miami and 1hr to get to Orlando... but I *SPIT* on their NBA teams! "Bless God and bless the (Celts)"-Lady GaGa (she said gays but she really meant Celts)

This needs a more in-depth article; such things are rarely satisfying.

Mr. Johnson is a maniac. But to read about him makes me wonder if I'm doing enough of what I need to be doing in my own life.

Butler doesn't even own a television!

Interesting: Johnson doesn't do drills; the work is on actual game skills. And the close coordination with the team was a revelation to me; the writer's metaphor of an nba "ecosystem" is apt.

Terrific article, wish there were a couple of hours of video to go with it.

In fairness to that coach haven't you also been a victim of Bennett's potential in post suggesting the team go get him on here? Also you believe Embid fluff pieces but not this one on Brown?

To the critics here, the excerpts of the OP are not much hype. They are explaining the process. Results TBD.

I'm not judging one way or the other.  I'm just saying that Bennett is an example of a trainer who raved about him last Summer.

Fine just pointing it out though so you are aware that we are aware.
