When the Celtics signed Zeller, I think that was a pretty clear indication of what they thought about Mickey's ability to contribute this season.  Now, Zeller only has one season guaranteed so I expect Mickey will play D-League this season and then get another shot next season.

Mickey has to beat out Bentil though.  I suspect Bentil will not be on the roster and will play in Portland with Mickey but you never know.

thats rather generic responce , he was a rookie and young and at back of train
-i watched him up in maine and he was a different player to summer league
we had quite a logjam up front-is mickey in danger of being cut or traded-
or is it another season in maine
lot's of rookies get playing time, but Mickey was a 2nd round pick for a reason.  It is also rare for 2nd round picks to last in the league for a reason.  If Mickey is good enough he will play, if he isn't he won't.  That really is what it boils down to.

I think a lot of guys with talent never get a real chance in the NBA. Probably not many guys with all-star talent, but a guy like Mickey that I think has Brandon Bass-level talent might not get a chance to show it in the wrong situation.

Yeah you're not really wrong about that but Jerebko will probably be a pretty key rotation player this year.  I think he earned it last year.  I have not seen nearly enough from Mickey to justify shaking up the rotation.  He's not even ahead of Zeller.

next year yabusele and zizic a rebounder and likes to play rough on offensive boards
-question how is mickeys lateral speed and his switching-the fans haven't got to see mickey really play against nba guys-
he really did dominate in d league with his blocking-

People will be surprised by Mickey's ability when he gets minutes, he is a very well-rounded player. I've watched him a lot and genuinely believe in him.

Folks are making way too much of a couple mediocre summer league games where he was coming off of injury and playing with a bunch of rooks who have zero idea of how to play team defense.

He looked far, far better all year in the d-league last season. His rotations were better, and he looked more confident and polished... probably because he healthy and was playing within a system he was comfortable with. He plays like a leader.

The kid is an athletic freak, and has nice touch on offense. High BBIQ overall.

He's not some lazy stiff either: he's a student of the game and modeled his game after Dennis Rodman.

C's had a roster logjam last year, not surprising to see the rookie get shorted on minutes. He looked good in limited minutes on the C's last year. He needs to fight extra hard and bust into the rotation. IMO if he can get there he'll stick, his athleticism and skill give him a higher ceiling than a lot of our other players.

Injuries happen.  It's better to have too much depth rather than not enough.  With average team health, Mickey is likely to have a couple of games where he has a chance of proving he deserves a bigger role.  It's better to stock your deep bench with guys like Mickey and see their potential wasted by a lack of playing time, so long as they maintain the right attitude, than to have veteran retreads who will be mediocre at best.

If he proves himself in training camp that he is ready for playing time maybe you'll see a small trade with JJ traded somewhere, and Mickey would take his minutes.

Off of training camp?  No way.  Jerebko has played good playoff minutes for this team and Mickey could hardly do anything in summer league this year.
Agree, jerebko is far better in every aspect of game except shot blocking compared to Mickey.  Like him but he's a Powell sort of guy.  I do like Danny's signing and trying to develop him.  With growth and the right fit he could be a solid bench guy for little money.  Not the level of Leon Powe but along those ideas.

I like Mickey too but he is not better than Jerebko and this team is yes developing but also trying to win now.  Meanwhile the Celtics have two impressive looking bigs waiting to come over next year that we just drafted (Zizic and Yab).  His time is running out to find playing time and a spot on this roster.

Even if he doesn't and we move on from him, he could have an NBA career.  But he will need to earn his way onto this team.

There is of course always the possibility of a trade and then maybe time opens up for him.  But right now IMO it would take something like that happening to see him play any minutes this year.

TP......I was wondering if the signing of Zeller had to do with the uncertain development of Mickey , who seemed lost as Fab Melo at times.

i read an article tha twas based on who he patterned his game after rodman and how he was a student of the game and art of rebounding  knowing and understanding the angles-how much time he spent mastering a quick 2nd jump and watching film
as to being lost  that may have been this years summer league-new players,no practice after coming back from injured shoulder-i felt much better about mickey after reading that-

Catching up on reading this thread I should have clarified my Jerebko comment better.  Haha

I agree with everyone saying JJ is the better player now, and more important to our success this year.  However, being on the last year of his contract and most likely not part of our future plans especially if we sign a max contract next offseason(not to mention future roster crunch with Nets pick, Yabu, and Zizic) maybe we could risk trading him while selling high as he is pushing 30 years old.

Maybe even Brown too can fill more of the small ball 4 that JJ fills if Mickey still isn't capable of rotation minutes with Green the backup 2/3 along with Smart and Rozier the backup guards.

Johnson is in the same boat contractually as JJ but more vital to this year's team success.  Zeller's new contract in a sense replaces JJ's contract as cap filler in a possible big trade (while not being tradeable until 12/15).

I do like JJ a lot though so I wouldn't be comfortable with a throwaway trade.  Maybe something like JJ and Hunter as a possible cost controlled role player for an unprotected first say down the line in 2020 by a playoff team now.  Sort of like the Gerald Henderson trade back in the day.  If we can't pull off anything like that I'd rather just keep him.  We don't see what goes on in training camp with practices and scrimmages so maybe Danny will just cut 2 of the lower prospects if they aren't showing any improvement at all.

The season hasnt even started yet

Thank you and a TP for you.  Mickey will heal and earn real minutes this season, as he fits the way we play quite nicely, thank you.  It can take a young player a season or two to earn time when the roster is stacked from 1-15.
