i think jaylen got sidetracked his freshmen year-there was competition for his basketball focus
he is quite bright and was enthralled with intellectual pursuits
school was not to be endured  but liberating with its challenges
he put a team of mentors around him and took doctorate courses
my theory is that brown did not get lazy but diluted and fell back on his strengths, physicality and ignored an improvement in all around game

after a summer of single minded focus and nba coaching we may see a vastly improved jaylen from his collegiate season
it will be exciting watching jaylen but there is no magic-hard word work and time with a sprinkle of luck
imagine how many reps of shots, imagine how much more seriously he treats his weight room now, imagine the growth with the tutelage of nba coaches and scrimmaging or one on ones with marcus

could be a huge leap from summer league-

I hope so too. I was a little curious that his other pursuits would mean maybe he wouldn't have closer to a bird/ Kobe type obsession to get better but I think it will be easy to tell after a year ( getting meaningful minutes consistently I think is imperative) if he's really got a huge ceiling .

I somewhat agree, he sounds like a smart kid and I don't think he will stop pursuing his education. I bet he will get his degree within 3-4 years, taking some summer classes or perhaps even some online classes during the season. That kid is very bright and obviously values his education which you don't see very often in the NBA...hell even in the NFL. He is really someone whom you love on and off the court

just saw a picture of jaylen with vintage volkswagn bus not fully restored called the mystery machine-those old vw's all rotted underneath including the heating boxes-he will fit right in in cambridge-a jock -intellectual with a beat up vw bus
-bill walton come mentor this kid he has the makings of quite a character
i used to live in cambridge in late sixties and bought a 56 porsche convertible  about the same engine as vw but the same undercarriage and heater box problem-froze my butt off
-thats great car for sun and beach and trips to vermont
-but jaylen buy a 4 wheel jeep for the winter  you will get where your going

A VW bus is bad news for a Boston winter.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I'm not concerned about Jaylen being an academic. Instead of playing NBA 2K and lounging around, he will be studying in his free time. There will still be plenty of other time to focus on basketball. It's impossible to dedicate every free minute to it.

Something tells me he will have no problems studying and analyzing game film, as well.

This and I am confident he will contribute. It wouldn't surprise to see him surprise, but that all comes back to what your expectations are.

Also he will be taught by one of the best young coaching minds in the game.

I'm  interested in how well he can apply and translate what he uncovers in film to the court. In 15 years,  he could very well make the hall of fame as both a player and a coach.

I have basically no expectations of Jaylen in year 1.  I think he has a chance to make major development, but it will happen from practicing every day against quality NBA players in a winning environment with an outstanding coach.   Year 2 is where I'll be looking for signs of progress.  Hopefully he gets a ton of reps playing against guys like Jae Crowder this season.  I'm not anticipating him to make a leap this Summer.  He probably will have to struggle at first and hopefully push through it.

This is a great environment for Brown.  I hope in 5 years he's better than Jimmy Butler.

I expect a lot from this kid. He's got it all; right size, athletics and head. Of course he's not there yet but in a right situation, with good teammates, coach and organisation which we have, he can be a great player. I don't expect a lot from him in his first year, but... If he comes right, if he comes with the right mindsetup, if he comes better after summer workout, if he's prepared for this, if he has a unnatural will to succseed in this league, then maybe I can see DA parting ways with Jae and trading him along with other pieces for a star player. This way he frees up a sport for Brown in a starting lineup. Now probably there is very small chance for this to happen next season, but if Brad and Danny sees his growth and untapped potential and on the other hand he gets an opportunity for a trade for a superstar, he may very well do this. Either way, if Jaylen is the real deal, Jae is expendable next or the season after. I love him for being such a different person then most of NBA athlets. He seems smart and not scared to show that. With the league being made of most popular and trendy persons, him being nerdish is amazing. I am intrigued with the potential of the relationship between great minds of Brad and him. Hope he sticks to baskatball 100% and studies in the summer. Hope he relizes that he can be on of the best in this league. Seems he sets a high goals for himself and that is s great start. Hope he's the real deal. Sry for the messed up text, it was in a hurry. Celtics all the way!

There was a rumor that Brown played him 1 on 1 a while back and might have actually beat Butler once.

This, though I still hope to see some flashes in his rookie year.  I suspect he won't be as impressive as Antoine Walker (17.5ppg) or Paul Pierce (16.5ppg) were in their rookie seasons.
