So Denver just moved Lauvergne, opening up a roster spot. They have a pretty balanced roster but if there is a place for Young to have the pressure taken off of him and the opportunity to develop then Denver would be it.

Would they have interest for a top-55 protected pick?

Or just let him get cut and sign him for the Vet minimum instead

That is probably why they opened up that spot. Thinking of the huge opportunity  ;)

Waiting for him to get cut would prevent them from gaining his bird rights, if they even managed to sign him.  If they want him, they'll trade for him rather than playing the waiting game

I highly doubt they want him, though

James Young's Bird Rights?  Have zero value.

Right now, no, but if they wanted to add him to their team, they'd want the ability to keep him long term, too. (I guess his RFA rights would be more of a draw, but that's beside the point)

Nobody is adding James Young for his year one contribution, it's his long-term potential (if he has any) that they would be looking for. If he plays well, then having the ability to resign him without worrying about another team snatching him up would be important, especially if it only costs you a heavily protected 2nd

I mean, Danny hardly ever simply just cuts somebody when he can gain some sort of asset out of it, even one as minor as a late second round pick. It's also good for his reputation around the league as being player-friendly.

I think that'd be best for all parties involved rather than just cutting him, though it'd depend on Denver's interest. But why wouldn't they be interested in a young shooter for basically free right now when they're not anywhere close to competing?

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Enter: John Holland, a much better (and cheaper) basketball player.

BitterJim brings up an interesting point about gaining Young's RFA status, but that is hardly the biggest issue with Young right now.

Unless Denver sees a massive upgrade out there, I imagine they would be better off just leaving the spot open until something more appetizing comes along.

Didn't they just add Murray?  I don't think they'll want to put any roadblocks in his way to getting minutes (since both are really SGs), although Young may not be good enough to be a factor, and if he is then some competition might be nice.  I think he'd be more appealing to a team that really needs shooting and doesn't mind having a roster full of scrubs, like Philly or the Nets

How crazy would it be if Young went to the Nets. Immediately finds himself and averages 18 a game helping lead them to an unforseen run at the 8th spot while developing a beautiful inside out game with lopez. That would be the worst right?

Double-edged sword. Denver has been doing a really good job of talent evaluation lately. If they take on James Young, even odds its because we gave up on him too early. If he's as bad as we think, Denver wouldn't want him.

Obviously it would depend on Denver's interest. I was looking from ours and James's as that is what we know more of.

The only way James can be anything in this league is through opportunity, he won't get that here, not anymore. Denver has a deep team but often struggles with injuries at the positions he plays. Also as people have said they develop players well. If we trade him away and he turns into a rotation player that is not a bummer. We have too many players, for us it would be avoiding the financial hit
