The Celtics on Wednesday finalized a three-year deal with second-round draft pick Ben Bentil, according to a league source. The former Providence forward will receive a partial guarantee in the first year, the source said.

Bentil’s signing will put the Celtics’ roster at 18 players, three above the maximum. Last week, a league source told the Globe that Bentil and guards John Holland, James Young, and R.J. Hunter would likely be in a training camp battle for the team’s 15th and final roster spot.

Bentil played well for the Celtics in the Utah Jazz summer league earlier this month, averaging 8.7 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. But when forward Jordan Mickey returned from a shoulder injury in the Las Vegas summer league, Bentil’s playing time decreased and he struggled, going 1 for 10 from the field.

Last season, Bentil averaged 21.1 points and 7.7 rebounds and made 32.9 percent of his 3-point attempts for the Friars.

On Tuesday, the Celtics finalized a four-year, $5.5 million deal with Demetrius Jackson, the 45th overall pick.

PC was strictly a 2 man team, so he got a lot of coverage along with Dunn and might thrive offensively more in the NBA. Decent 3FG shot, can drive, and play inside, but his defense and rebounding have a long way to go. Maine if he sticks as a project.

I will hypothesize that his first year is $600k, with $400k guaranteed, and the final two years are at the minimum (obviously not guaranteed).

What's up is that the Celtics were not using Summer League to evaluate Bentil or Jackson.  They'd made the decision on those two already, and all that really mattered was available cap space and contract negotiations.
