The closest we've had to a true back up point guard over the past couple years has been Phil Pressey. Last season Turner basically played point guard/forward even though he wouldn't be considered a true 1. Smart did his best. I'm not sure if he's a one or a two. His ball handling style puzzles me.

The C's have a collection of tweeners and it appears likely Smart and Rozier will play the back up point. Ideally, many of us thought Jackson would fill that role. After his summer league performance it's unlikely he'll even make the team. The good news is Terry has stepped it up during the Summer League. Even at that, he's still not a true one.

So, are we prepared to let Terry and Marcus run the ship when Isaiah rests? Or, should Danny be on the lookout for a true point guard?

Finding an alternative would be my choice. There must be someone in the D-League or elsewhere that could fill that role. My fear is that if Isaiah gets injured there won't anyone to replace him. Remember last season when we were woefully under-prepared when Kelly and Jae got hurt.

Obviously, with roster space at a premium someone like RJ, Mickey or Young would have to be traded in order to bring in someone new.

I think you are right, I was searching around the summer league stats and saw a pretty good point guard.  He's scoring 20ppg on 53% accuracy.  He also hit a game winning 3 point shot.

I think Rozier would be serviceable. That would start to shift Smart into the 2 guard role, which I think will (and prob should) eventually happen. Brown may be able to start transition breaks, too., with Turners former 2nd unit Who knows. I think he's going to surprise some people right out of the gate.

A second unit of Rozier/Smart/Brown/JJ/KO or Amir is fine.
CB Mock Deadline - Minnesota Timberwolves
Kemba Walker / Tyus Jones / Aaron Brooks
Jimmy Butler / Jamal Crawford / Treveon Graham
Rodney Hood / Nic Batum / Marcus Georges Hunt
Taj Gibson / Nemanja Bjelica / Jonas Jerebko
KAT / Derrick Favors / Cole Aldrich
Picks - 2018 CHA 1st (Lotto protected), none out

I think Smart and Rozier will alternate ball handling duties. Neither seem to be "pure PGs" but both are good enough to play PG.

Smart is a better floor general.  Rozier is more of a SG.  He looks to score 1st

Yikes.  Sounds like a nightmare, lol ;D.

On offense, lol?

Steven's rotation doesn't really need a pure PG. Just give him someone who can handle the ball and both Smart and Rozier would do just fine with it.

I think it's already established that Terry would get the preference over Marcus at the PG spot. We already saw evidence of this in the playoffs, when Danny had Rozier handling the ball and Smart playing off the ball.

Makes perfect sense since Rozier is much quicker and is also a far better ball handler.

As far as passing goes I agree that Smart has the better instincts, but to be honest I think the ability to get the ball up the court is more important - and Rozier (with his handle and quickness) is much better suited to that task.

Nice find.  Another player Danny missed out on.  TP!

Once the Blake Griffin trade happens--we'll be looking for some new bench players anyway.

I think Smart should be the back up pg. He has developed into the roll when he's been given the opportunity and it would be nice to see him do it over the course of a full season. If it helps keep him from taking so many 3s then that's also a positive

He lacks the ball handling and explosiveness. Decent enough spot up shooting, great defense (even at PG) and versatility to guard most positions -- frieken wonderful. That said, I imagine he will be traded sooner than later. Seems a PHI deal would've already happened if they valued Smart (and a pick) as much as Okafor or Noell.
