Ainge has gone against the team's needs at #1 two drafts in a row. He picks what he sees as the best player on the board. But that is subjective. What isn't subjective is a team need. Especially when two players are close in perceived ability, and maybe one of them fits a need better.
I'm thinking about last year when Portis dropped to them. That was a need. But Ainge drafted a guard--a team strength--because Rozier was on the top of his board. It was a questionable decision, although right now Rozier is one of the best players in the summer league. Maybe he'll get some PT this year. He didn't last year. Too many guards ahead of him. Portis would have probably gotten more PT. This year, somebody may have to get traded to make room for Rozier, assuming Brown takes Turner's place.
That game yesterday may have exposed some weaknesses up front. Brown has shown nothing yet--though injuring his knee affected him yesterday. It looked like Brown, for a time, was overmatched against Portis. Playing against 4s isn't going to do it for him. And he hasn't shown an outside shot yet. He has a ways to go to look like he was worth a #3. Actually, I liked Bender a bit more in his game yesterday. He showed the ability to play inside and outside, though he missed a lot of shots. He does look a bit heavier than the Israeli League videos. And there is no substitute for length.
I would agree Dunn has the edge over Brown right now. Danny is just throwing dice on Brown. Dunn was a surer pick. But Ainge doesn't like kids who say they don't want to play in Boston and refuse to hand over their health records. That probably figured in his thinking. As for any trades, who do you believe? I haven't seen anything on who was actually willing to trade whom? All just a bunch of rumors. You have to judge players on their worth to the team, not as trade pieces.
You could say Ainge drafted closer to a need with Brown vs Dunn, another PG. Valid argument, but Brown isn't a 4 or 5, where the major need is. He addressed the 4 signing Horford, but Al's performance might suffer this year if he doesn't have a Millsap or equivalent next to him, to share the load. And right now, he doesn't.
