2016 Summer League Thread

Everyone is raving about Dunn on Hoopyshype. Bill Simmons recently said Brown is going to give him a drinking problem for the next 10 years.

I was so vocal about selecting Dunn and trading Smart yesterday. It's going to royally suck if he turns out to be a stud.

I was also vocal about taking Dunn - either as a trade chip or a player, but Brown was my 2nd fave player (still wasn't happy with the selection at the time since I wanted a trade, but am satisfied now).

Anyway, Dunn should be better the Brown - he is a tall, strong, explosive PG playing in summer league who just finished his senior season. It's really no question who should be farther along in his development, but Brown's potential is off the charts.

I recall. And yeah, I would've taken Brown next. Still optimistic about him. But the gap was pretty large between the two for me.

Watching the Lakers/NO game, Ingram looks good, but he also looks like a Biafran refugee, kinda wishing we'd grabbed Zubac, and Hield is having a horrendous debut. 3-15, 1-6 from 3.

I read one pre-draft report that had Zubac as a better prospect then Zizic. The writer compared how the team (in one game) did better with Zizic on the bench and Zubac taking his place.

Even NBADraft.net had Zubac ahead of him in their mock draft. My gut feeling (from watching highlights) is Zizic is a bit wooden/mechanical in his style of play. Hopefully, when he comes over we'll find out that he was the better choice.

If Danny would have known that Heild would be shooting 3-15 he would have grabbed him.

I feel really bad for Buddy he has no help out there he is a great scorer but when the defense only focuses on him, he won't get many good shots :/

Ingram looks better than I thought he would I can see him turning into a Durant clone.
 Dangelo looks like a bust to me and this isn't me being biased. He was getting ripped left and right all game and making terrible passes, he lacks D, and he should be scoring against these no name guards he was the best scoring guard in the draft last year so you can't read too much into his scoring
Nance looked nice he's extended his range and still is very athletic

I wouldn't count on it.  Smart sucked in Summer league both times he played in it. 

For those who were desperate to get Dunn, this game is going to irk them.  But they should be reminded that Dunn will be turning 23 years old during his rookie season.  He spent several years playing College ball.   Don't compare him to Brown (a 19 year old a year removed from High School).  It's a waste of time.

It's not so much about comparing them as believing Dunn was the better choice. Kid oozes all star potential.

Irrelevant, imo, and I have no idea why people hold the fact that Dunn chose to stay in school and get his degree against him .

I haven't checked the stats from last year but I'm sure he drew many FTs from it.

Smart is the type that would not be discouraged with poor FG% (although it hurt sometimes) and will his way into win by other means like passing, rebounding and defense.. Dunn could be the same so I'll hold my judgement for him later.

And yet he still shot 29%, lol.  Brb, finding stats .

Edit: found stats , and I stand corrected.  Smart shot 29% in his first summer league, and 35% last year, albeit the former being a much larger sample size due to injury, but still, that's not much of an improvement.  Welp .

Can we please recognize the entire reason we are having this conversation is that up till now Smart has been a bust?

Any half way decent guard would be forcing this conversation at this point because Smart has simply not lived up to expectations.  He needs to come back with an offensive game about 300% better than he was last year to make this conversation go away.

Summer-League is Summer-League, but you can at least compare players who played on that same level.

2014 Smart - 14.8 points, 4.2 assists, 4.2 rebounds, 2 steals, 0.4 blocks - 29%/26%/83% - 5 games - 29.2mpg

2015 Smart - 16 points, 4.2 assists, 3 rebounds, 2.4 steals,0.4 blocks - 35%/28%/84% in 24.9mpg

2015 Rozier - 12.3 points, 3.9 assists, 3 rebounds, 1.3 steals, 0.1 blocks - 35%/40%/83% in 27.8mpg

2016 Rozier (so far) - 19 points, 5 assists, 6.3 rebounds, 1 steal, 0.3 blocks, 46%/33%/82% - 29.1mpg

Rozer's been better.  But it should be noted that Smart was pretty bad in both his attempts at Summer league.

The kid just flat out sucks offensively. His upside on that end is so low, too. My biggest peeve here is that we are going to (and have) wait to long to trade him.

Perfonally, i felt this decision was a no brainer.  Dunn had/has All-Star written all over him.

To be fair Brown was my second choice after Dunn once Simmons and Ingram were gone, so it could have been worse.  But he was my very, very distant second choice.

Im just glad Danny didnt take Murray.

I really wanted Zubac over Zizic myself - and hes arguably the best player on the floor in a game thay features Ingram and Hield.

Ingram doesn't look special at all.  Can see some upside there but he hardly looks like a future superstar.

Hield will be fine, its his first debut game and he's missing shots he normally makes with his eyes closed - it happens. 

Best showing do far has been Dunn - kid dominated that gameagainst Murray...who (as i expected) looks like a total bust out there   Murray is disturbingly slow for a 6'4" guard...he moves like a tortoise in quicksand.  If he can average 10 PPG in the NBA this year ill be shocked.

At least Hield looks like a scirer.  Hes getting shots off and they just arent falling...hes making plays, getting to the basket and dishing off nicely. He looks solid, just cant buy a basket.

Murray is standing around like a tool looking like he had the mindset of an 8th man.

Yeah, very glad they didn't take Murray. He had the look of a guy who wasn't going to be able to get away with the same stuff he did in college.

That 'argument' always makes me laugh.  It seems like every year people say, 'well, you have to wait at least 2-3 years before we know whether or not if Ainge messed up'. That's all well and good, and I accepted it at first, but the problem is that people have been saying that for at least the last 8 years, lol (idk about anything prior to 2008 because I hadn't yet found this wonderful place, lol ). Even if Jackson and/or Bentil become a star/stars, haha, that will not in any make up for taking the wrong guy at 3, if that's how things ultimately turn out (even though I actually want Brown to succeed), to me.  No excuses.  You can't say that people have unrealistic expectations of Brown becoming a superstar when he was the 3rd pick in the draft.  It doesn't work that way.  He has to at least be an all star to justify his selection, imo.  I'm sorry if that's putting pressure on the kid, but it comes with the territory of being the third choice in ANY draft, let alone this one. 

Still, here's to you, Jaylen.  I'm rooting for you, big guy .

My draft board was and is Simmons then Dunn then everyone else. Barring injury Dunn is going to be a great player and was the obvious selection at number 3.  The team needs a star or he could have acquired a star.  Guys like Brown and Smart don't acquire stars.

I was for dunn pre-draft although my concern is if he would develop enough if we drafted him. Thats why i posted threads on whether we could get away with drafting him. With that said ilike brown, but he is raw and expect dunn to be better the first 2-3 years at least
