For what it's worth I don't think it's a forgone conclusion that he's not on the roster this season.

- He's on a pretty ****ty team in France that probably isn't that conducive to development
- He has a buyout.
- He's US sophomore-aged, so it's not as if he's so young that playing in the NBA would be actively harmful to his growth (Zizic is a year younger)
- He plays a position where minutes will be available (assuming Sullinger/Zeller walk)
- He has an elite skill that we're desperately in need of (spot-up shooting)
- You generally don't use the #16 pick on players you don't plan on seeing for years.

wasnt saric picked at #12 in the first round? sometimes that is what you do to get talent. it is often better to get good talent in a few years than lesser talent now.

But the reports that we were very interested in Hernangomez and that a lot of international players dropped because they weren't willing to be stashed makes me think that it's possible that Danny was set on getting Hernangomez and stashing him at 16, saw him go to the Nuggets, then just panicked because we were out of time and moved on to the next guy on the "willing to be stashed" list. That scares me a bit.

All valid points, but guys like Korkmaz and Zizic went after Yabusele and they were well ahead of him in mock drafts. It might just be that Ainge really likes Yabusele. There were a number of peculiar selections from 10-20.

I don't think Ainge is the type to panic like that.  I don't doubt that if he had Zizic above Yabu, he would have taken Zizic at #16, despite Zizic not being a stash guy.  I don't think it would have been different if it was another US guy there (like Levert or Elleson)

Are you referring to the mock drafts you've seen as "intel"?  Here's a tip for you:  Those are for entertainment purposes only.

Every draft pick is a roll of the dice. It's just that some rolls are more weighted towards success than others. This was no different.

Danny is betting at #16 on a 20-year-old kid with a unique combination of size, strength, speed, and shooting. I think the best comparison is Boris Diaw, who was a huge component of the Spurs' last championship team, but also a great player in France before he came over.

If you can teach this kid to play defense... yikes. Yes, in that case he'll be Draymond-like. Someone who can switch onto guards and not get killed, but also have the strength to bang with 4s and 5s. And on offense, pull bigs out to the perimeter since he can shoot the 3 and drive to the hoop.

Could be a complete bust... but I have no problem with gambling on him.

me too. i was hoping the celtics would pick him last year, but he pulled out of the draft.

such is life. now let's see whether yabusele pans out or not.

That's the real worry. Even if Yabusele has mid-first-round-talent, could he have been gotten at #23 or even farther back? Is there someone the Celtics valued more than Zuzic in the 17-22 range that could've been drafted #16 and then picked up Yab with #23? All questions we'll never know the answer to, I guess.
