I dont think we should assume the Noel trade was there. But here's what I would have done. I'm only looking at what the options were each time we picked.
3. Bender. Loved the kid. I think he could easily step in next season and play Jerebko's role while he's growing. Danny taking Brown convinces me that he's ok having someone that's not going to start but grow slowly. Benders ability to guard a bunch of postitons and develop into a playmaking 5 I feel is more likely than Brown learning how to play effective basketball. And he's so young...
16. Luwawu/Korkmaz. Yabusele might be fine, but his appeal is that he's a shooter and the 4 is the only position on the court where we have above average shooters making him a little redundant. If the only goal was to have someone who would stay overseas, that's fine, but if either of Luwawu or Korkmaz would have agreed to stay for even one year that would have been my first choice. I'd also at this point start looking at any of those later picks to start packaging for next years draft where we have comparably fewer selections. Even if we lost a little value, that'd be fine. I'd be thinking something along the lines of Danny's 31 and 35 for a future first, but would have started right here considering those packages because the 16 would have had more value.
23. Zizic. Perfect pick. Happy with that one.
31. Deyonta Davis. This is where I get even more sad. The 31 and 35 trade for a Clippers pick that is years away from coming and is protected against being in the lottery doesn't seem to be a great pick for someone who has lottery level talent.
35. Zhou Qi/Stephen Zimmerman. If Zhou would stay overseas that's my pick, but if not Zimmerman is hard to pass up. He may only be in the D League, but that's fine.
45. Jackson. I think he's a good value pick that late.
51 - 58. I'd have taken who would have agreed to go overseas. Not knowing who that is I can't really say.
Want to get crazy? Then I'd let all of our FAs walk. Turner is likely gone anyway. Sully is good and if we could keep him at a bargain that'd be fine, but if he gets an offer over $12M AAV, then I'd be fine seeing him leave. That'd leave me with this roster
PG -- IT / ROZIER / JACKSON
SG -- BRADLEY / SMART / YOUNG
SF -- CROWDER / HUNTER / (LUWAWU?)
PF -- BENDER / JEREBKO / MICKEY / DAVIS
C -- JOHNSON / OLYNYK
RIGHTS:
LUWAWU / KORKMAZ / YABUSELE
ZIZIC
QI
51
58
I'd honestly at that point would like to find new homes for Jerebko and Johnson. A consolidation trade would be great. It's not that I don't like them it's just that they're blocking minutes from guys I want to get on the court. If Rozier, Jackson, Young need to go with them that'd be ok. A wing would be great, someone who could spell Crowder if Hunter isn't ready to jump into that role. If Luwawu was available this wouldn't be an issue, so maybe he's a better pick for us, hmm.
All in all, I'd want the team to look like this:
STARTERS:
IT
BRADLEY
CROWDER
BENDER
OLYNYK
That'd be a lot of shooting and this team could play legitimate 5 out. Benders role in Maccabi was to play off ball shooting 3s. He could do that here, so he's ok starting the same way Jerebko was. They'd get eaten up in the post, but not many teams can make them pay for that anyway.
BENCH
ROZIER
SMART
HUNTER
DAVIS
MICKEY
Obviously these guys wouldn't be getting as many minutes, but these would be the guys to spell the starters. I'd never want a wholesale change.
The other guys, Jackson, Young, Zimmerman if we had him, would earn minutes and compete. If Young were able to compete with Hunter, that'd be great, but it seems like he's a sunk cost at this point. We might even *want* Zizic to come over being that the team could use some post defense.
The team would definitely take a step back next season, but that's ok. It seems like we should be expecting it. I think if those guys had a chance to develop, and a lot of it hinges on Smart, that'd be fine. I feel like with taking Brown we're placing a lot of emphasis on Smart to develop anyway, so I'd be kind of going whole hog on this anyway.
All in all, I'd rather have free agency before the draft. I feel like having to plug holes with rookies without knowing who else may come is a little difficult.
