I was surprised that the return for Teague was only the 12 pick. I figured Teague was worth more than that.
Last year of his contract. Teague's value is down.
Same will happen to Isaiah Thomas in one year's time. Now is the time for Isaiah to be traded if Ainge doesn't want to give him a max contract in 2 years time.
A few things:
1) I doubt IT will get a max contract in two years. There will be less cap room available for many teams due to a much smaller cap rise, perhaps even a cap contraction, and teams will have spent a lot of money the next two years. Teague, for instance, will not get the max next season, although he'll probably get a hefty extension this summer.
2) The Celtics may be at or over the cap, and so would value Bird rights more than Atlanta would have next year.
3) It's been said for awhile now that 1st round draft picks are very valuable in the current salary cap regime, given the cap explosion and the slot levels. The cap has gone up about 60% since the start of the CBA, whereas slot values have increased about 18%. A CBA revision may help catch slot values back up in the future, which could depress future picks' values somewhat. But again, the answer may not be "Teague is worse less than I thought" and rather "the 12th pick is worth more than I thought."
