I just came across this article on The Ringer....not sure if it has been shared before but I thought it was an interesting read.

I'm certainly torn between my preferences for the 3rd pick....Bender vs. Murray is the only debate in my mind.

TP: Excellent article! Thanks for sharing...

Bender is likely going to be one of those players who, if we draft, we'll regret it. And, if we don't draft him, we'll regret it.

I think Bender is an interesting gamble for the Celtics. We can stash him overseas for a couple years and use that roster space for a few of our other picks in this draft. Odds are he's not worth #3 overall but who knows. I'd give him a 5-10% chance of being as good as Kristaps P. on the Knicks.

I'd rather play Russian roulette than be responsible for our #3 pick this year.

What are you basing those odds on?  I'm guessing nothing.  And he's coming to the nba next season.  So there will be no stashing.

Either way, I hope we draft him because it would mean that DA sees star potential (given that he is perhaps the biggest risk in the draft).

I'm VERY intrigued by Dragan.

Imagine him and a Marc Gasol frontcourt...

I think he would take a while to develop but Brad Stevens is not an ordinary coach.

In the right system his growth could be faster.

Another article....

Chad Ford recently likened Bender to Draymond Green -- although he admitted an ideal comp does not exist. Well, Bender was probably the first person in line to approve of the comparison.

The player he finds himself most drawn to these days is Draymond Green, the Golden State Warriors’ versatile power forward who has become a prototype of the "stretch 4" forward that is so trendy these days in the NBA and which many predict Bender will become.

"He’s the guy who is trying to organize the game," Bender said. "He is passing the ball, he is rebounding, he is scoring, he is all over the court, so that is what I am trying to be."

and one more article I may have linked before...it certainly shows the kids journey.

I'd love to acquire Marc and Pau to help further our playoff hopes and mentor Bender.  Although I don't see how we would ever land Marc.  Pau is a Free Agent.

How would you stash him? Is he under contract still overseas? If not, why would he stay overseas?

Teams can't just decide to "stash" guys.

He is also chippy, and instigator and a tough guy, if Bender tried any of those things, he would end up in a hospital as he is so skinny.

Yes.  I'm glad it's Danny.  He may very well make a mistake with this pick, but I think I'd rather have him making the call than just about anyone.   A trade down to 4-7 depending on what we recieve as compensation (and who is left where we pick) could be the best outcome.

He is in fact under contract overseas for several more seasons.  That said, his buyout isn't very large and he has stated that he wants to come to the US next year.  I'd like him more if he were willing to stay overseas for a bit longer, myself.  The C's wouldn't have to sign him because he's under contract (at least, I think that's the rule), but it's a bad way to start out a relationship unless he says he'd be willing to during the pre-draft process.

The team is never obligated to sign a player, and they retain their rights for a full year after the draft (which is why the Philly signed Embiid and Noel when they did).  If they play any professional games (or are under contract in a professional league-I'm not 100% on that specific part), then that one year starts either after each game or at the end of each overseas contract (this is the part I need to check again)

So as long as they play overseas, the team that drafted them retains the rights.  And after a few years, the player is exempt from the rookie scale.

Between teams being able to contribute only $650k to buyouts (Bender's is $1.3 million, so the rest comes from his contract/pocket) and possibly getting more when not subject to the rookie scale, some players (Mirotic, Saric) decide to play overseas and come over later.  Others want the guaranteed money now and better development available in the NBA (Porzingis)

Everything Bender has said indicates that he wants to play in the NBA from day 1, but it's always possible that Danny talks to him and he'd consider staying overseas (or that Danny says he'll only draft him of he agrees to play overseas, like Marcus Thornton or Colton Iverson).  It'll be interesting to see how it plays out
I'm bitter.
