Ok GM's of Celticsblog.  Below is my preferred roster for the 2016/17 season.  How would you make it happen.

Amended to remove Mozgov - Although I think his big body for some minutes would be a good asset.

^Free Agent
* Trade

Thomas / Rozier /
Smart / ~Turner / Hunter
Durant^ / Crowder / +Bender
Love* / Olynyk / Mickey
Whiteside^ / Mozgov / ~Zeller

* Trade Bradley, Johnson, Jerebko and #16 and #23 for Love and Mozgov
^ Sign Durant and Whiteside
+ Draft Bender #3
~ Resign Turner and Zeller

What I like about this roster is the ability to play big or small.
Focus on Defense or Offense.

For example:
Defense: Rozier/Smart/Crowder/Durant/Whiteside
Offense 3 point: Thomas/Hunter/Durant/Love/Olynyk
Big: Turner/Crowder/Durant/Olynyk/Mozgov
Small: Thomas/Smart/Crowder/Durant/Mickey
Rim Defenders: Smart/Crowder/Durant/Mickey/Whiteside
Ball Handlers: Thomas/Rozier/Smart/Durant/Olynyk

Not possible. You have to waive Johnson and JJ to make the required capspace to sign two max free agents, even if Whiteside is one of them, I believe.

We don't need Mozgov.

Is there a conceivable way to keep the core of IT, Bradley, Crowder & Smart, while adding Durant, Love & Whiteside?

Thomas / Smart
Bradley
Durant / Crowder
Love
Whiteside / Olynyk

Please tell me yes.

I'd do this:

^ Free Agent
* Trade
' Resigned

Smart/IT
Bradley/Rozier
Durant^/Turner'
Love*/Mickey
Ibaka**/KO

^ Sign Durant to max
* Trade Johnson and Crowder for Love
** Trade JJ, Young, and #3 for Ibaka
' Resign Turner to 3 year/$24M after he takes hometown discount

Fill out roster with older vets looking to ring chase.

You could maybe keep JJ if Whiteside is one of the max free agents.  (The numbers could or could not work based on a couple hundred thousand dollars, once the exact cap is known.)  But you certainly could not keep Amir.  It'd be very difficult to put together a trade that bring back Love, but not impossible if JJ fits on the roster -- you'd need to add about $3 million in salaries to AB+JJ.  The Mozgov portion requires a sign-and-trade and makes no sense at all in terms of roster construction.

Is Whiteside getting max contract?

I dont think so.

I guess technically Thomas Smart Bradley Crowder Olynyk is 29 mil
Durant is 25 love is 21 so thats 75 mil.

Cap is set at 92 mil I think so you'd have 17 for Whiteside.

That is assuming you dump all the rookies and renounce your rights to all draft picks and RFAs. Meaning the rest of your roster would be vet minimum guys and thus would probably suck.

Yeah, someone will offer it to him no doubt.

You're probably right. Is there a better option out there than Amir for that price or less?

Bradley is traded out. So you have another 8 million.

Yeah, I wasn't sure of how Whiteside's contract would work given his experience/career in the league.

I actually think you could technically keep JJ with two Durant/Horford max level contracts, too. If you renounced all of our free agents and traded away all of our first rounders, I believe you'd have around $6M in cap space after signing two 9-year max contracts at around $26M a pop (assuming a $92M cap that is). I think I'm remembering the article and numbers right.

Also wouldnt it be nearly impossible to resign Turner and Zeller once the two max free agents are signed? I thought they would need to be renounced to get rid of their cap holds in order to free enough space to sign the two max free agents, meaning, you could only resign them with available cap space which would be impossible since it would be nearly depleted from giving out two max contracts.

Yeah, you'd probably be lucky to get one of them resigned, let alone two. Good catch. I wasn't even paying attention to that.

Trading Bradley would open up the cap space for this, but a) Whiteside is not likely signing for less than the max (21 mil) which means you have 4 mil rather than 8 b) in this scenario it was specifically required that we keep Bradley and c) now you have even fewer quality players.

The only decent players you can get under 4 mil are rookie contract guys, so wed just have to pick 3 or 4 of our picks and then the rest of the roster is vet min guys.

I looked it up a while back and their cap holds are not inconsequential. I believe Turners is 4.5 mil and Zellers is upwards of 6 mil.
