If Durant comes here it's going to be something like Butler, Horford and Durant and Isaiah or something like that.  We only have so many roster spots.  Yes AB is good and can win a championship as a SG but the right players need to be put around him just the same.  There is nothing against AB here.

We can  keep drafting and adding to our talent level as well but something has to give if we are going to get a player like Durant.

The Bulls may decide to keep Butler for all we know right now.    But in order to get a player like that and start the domino's rolling you have to give up something.  Chicago isn't just going to give him away.

for those who can't see the article:
Butler for AB, Rozier, Jonas, #3 and #16

seems a bit steep.  maybe #23 for #16 instead.

you're right, still too steep

I know the Bulls said no one is untouchable and that's why Butler rumors started popping up, but does anyone know another reason why they would trade him?

I don't think he gets along with Rose, but I'd rather trade Rose for Noel or something.

Criticized his coach to the media. Also, in the final press conference, Gar Forman was ambivalent when asked if they'd consider trading him.

Maybe it's the tip of the iceberg, maybe it's just the frustration of highly competitive men who've been through the total collapse of their expectations.  I'd bet on the latter.

I agree with all that.
But something important to keep in mind is that AB bring something elite (defense on PGs). That's why we are a good match up with GS and also we do well vs OKC each year.
Celtics have to build accordingly. Having a good offense like OKC is not enough. You need both elite to win championship.
AB is a must keep.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Whatever it takes if Durant agrees to come here, but I agree with others that without that assurance, the deal is a bit steep.

AB, #3, Young/RJ (no Rozier!), and a couple of 2nds is about as far as I would go - not because I don't love AB or have high hopes with the #3, but because Butler is an upgrade over AB and it really gives us a solid direction.

For Durant and Horford, though, we would likely need to dump off Crowder for future pick(s) as clearing him or IT double-max space - that would REALLY suck since he is basically my favorite Celtic right now, but again, anything for Durant.

you would hold up the deal for some mid 1st round picks?  That just doesn't make any sense.  Those guys are easily replaceable.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

I also agree with that statement

If Durant agrees to come here

that is already IT/Butler/KD

can a salary cap guy confirm if we also still have the cap space to sign Horford...now I don't consider Horford a max, but if that keeps KD happy, you have to go get him

IT/Butler/KD/Horford

WOW

though I don't know what that means for our bench

Smart/Turner/Crowder/KO

I am not sure if that bench can carry the load offensively when our starters are resting. But I think that is instantly a ECF team that has the potential to beat LeBron and co

the important thing is we are keeping Smart.  He is the best one at that.  We keep Smart, Crowder, Turner, KO, and resign Sully or sign someone else.  Amir moves to the bench as well.  Only so many guys can play.

Smart and Turner are our best bench guards.  Bradley is  more a starter.
Sully and KO.  Plus Amir and Micky.
Crowder also moves to the bench and take jerebko's spot.

Horford
Durant
Butler
+Isaiah

is a big upgrade over what we have right now.

That's a championship team. KO, Crowder, Smart, Turner, Sully, Amir, Rj, Young, Mickey is a group of championship roleplayers.  Plus we have picks the next couple years to add to that when Amir's and Turners contract expires etc.  Smart gets better. So does Mickey.  We draft a couple guys.

I more question if the bulls will do it.  They would probably take Dunn at 3 I'm guessing.  STart from scratch wth Bradley and Dunn.  They could take Brown.   Or even Bender.  Gasol is aging.  They could bring a guy like Bender along.

There are really two paths we can take.  Something like this or we are going to be in the same position and talking about trading isaiah next year, and building around smart and whoever we draft this year.

Thoughts?

http://windycityhoops.com/trade-proposal-sending-jimmy-butler-boston-celtics-pending/

I would.pull the trigger in this... leaves cap space for another star.
I assume it's already been pointed out that the original "source" of this "rumour" explicitly says:

These scenarios are not real or necessarily rumored.

Also, it's Bleacher Report.

It's an overpay.  But I could probably live with that trade, if that paved the way to bring a 3rd star to Boston.

I would like to see the Bulls give something else in return with Butler though.  Maybe a young prospect like Portis in return or maybe their 2018 1st rounder.
It is definitely an overpay - but you probably are going to need to overpay to get a team to part with someone at Butler's level.  Still I don't think I'd do it.  Substitute someone else for JJ and send them a lower 2nd pick than  #16 and I might though.  But then Chicago probably says no.

You can twist scenarios every which way but I will guarantee that in the end, Jimmy Butler is not going anywhere. He's not getting traded. I don't even know why you guys talk about him. Its a waste of time talking about him.

Like it or not though the celtics are making runs at these guys.  DA isn't going to leave any stone unturned if it can put us in better position.  We made a run at him at the deadline and are doing it again most likely.  The media is annoying.  Nothing new there. You just have to read between the lines.

Another team everybody is watching, one that seems more realistic, is the Celtics, who landed the third pick in the draft and who made a run at Butler at the trade deadline.

The Celtics’ offer was characterized as underwhelming, but given what the Bulls reportedly are asking for -- a starter, a rotation player and multiple first-round draft picks -- every offer would be underwhelming, if not impossible.

This new offer basically is that.  Whether the Bulls plan to trade Butler is something else entirely at this point.  Who knows if this bleacher report guy made this rumor up, but makes sense if we are making a run at durant and horford this summer.

We also are a team that can afford to do that if it means landing those guys.

We also just locked up Stevens and Ainge which reading between the lines shows stability whether that's to entice a trio of players to sign here or continue to build through the draft.  The Celtics are not stupid. They are playing both ends of the fence. They know who is good in the draft and who may be available possibly. They aren't going to make moves on a whim.  They know what they can and can't do.  These offers are being made as barometers to entice certain situations.

Talking about Jimmy Butler is fine.   It passes the ok test.

People thinking we are stupid to trade for him or the bulls are stupid enough to give him to us for nothing are out of their minds though.

I don't ever pay overpays. I just tried to buy life insurance. I definitely don't see myself as an applicant. I am a buyer. If the price comes back higher than the quote I'll keep shopping. I know my health and my family history.  Overpays are a no go. You do one and people will expect it every time.
