The celtics have been building a nucleus and style of play for a couple years now but have the ability to take that to the next level this offseason. Ainge made smart trades for Isaiah Thomas and Crowder to go with the other players he has been drafting and developing. Guys like Bradley, KO, Sully etc plus filled the roster with other smart aquisitions in Amir and Turner and drafted Smart.
What this team lacks is athleticism though as much as it lacks stars. If you look at teams like San Antonio they were able to go from having Duncan and Robinson to Parker, Ginobli and Duncan and now Duncan, Leonard and Aldridge because they had that centerpiece and drafted well and made smart moves underneath.
We are kind of doing that backwards in ways. We don't have our centerpiece player yet. Golden State also has Curry and Klay and Draymond as that 3rd guy plus good pieces in Bogut, Barnes, Iggy, Livingston, Ezeli, Speights etc..
Drafting Brown and Chriss to go with a guy like Okafor would be that for us. Taking that next step forward as far as a foundation. We can maybe move someone for a guy like Butler or even add Horford over Okafor but I wouldn't be in any rush to make that moves yet. I wouldn't necessarily sell ourselves short. We can also afford to develop our guys and add a guy like Durant ultimately as well where we have a young athletic team that can grow with him.
Ainge is really good at finding the right talent and pieces ultimately. I'm not too worried about it, but continuing to add to our talent level and maximizing our position is going to win games and put us in position to get a guy like Durant hopefully.
We want those stars but we also want a core team. Klay and Curry do it. Isaiah and Durant could do the same here mixed with someone else but it's as much about the supporting cast.
