This draft will undoubtedly be one of the toughest tests for Danny and his crew. There are 1000’s of possible variables to consider, e.g., all the Celtic’s picks, the draft order, the players each team decides to select, offensive stats, defensive stats , physical stats, intangibles, videos, scouting reports, the 8 picks, players other teams might want to trade for, teams calling in, Danny calling out, possible free agents coming, free agents possibly leaving, salary considerations, players injury history status, team needs, ownership concerns, salary cap, etc., etc.
During the draft days Danny has to keep all these considerations/evaluations in his head (or computer/chart) and somehow come up with the best decision(s) he can. Then, he has to repeat this process again during free agent dealings a week later.
In my opinion there are too many parameters to consider for Danny just to play his hunches and/or make spontaneous decisions. Danny will have to put himself and his crew into overdrive once the lottery order is settled. How they’ll do it, I doubt we’ll ever know.
Obviously, he and his scouts have been working hard evaluating talent. But, will that be enough?
I’m hoping he will not only have list of players he wants and/or fits the teams needs, but also have a list of deals he would accept, reject or propose. That way come draft night he won’t be desperately clinging to a hope and a prayer. Or, be caught by surprise with a last second proposal. He’ll know beforehand what is acceptable or not. I know his crew will be prepared, but this off-season they’ll have to be over-prepared.
My feeling is that with so many variables the probability of screwing up is much higher because there are so many assets on the table. And, every astute GM is looking to get rid of trash and pick up gold. This year's decisions may prove to be Danny's ultimate test as a GM.
