Whoa, just saw that Qi shot 60% from 3 in the drills.  I just knew he was huge -- I didn't know he shot from long range.  I can't imagine he'd still be there at 16.

Maybe he'll be the next Pavel Podkolzine.  Look up his pre-draft workouts.
More likely the next Bruno Sundov (Podkolzine was bigger and didn't shoot threes).

PP didn't shoot 3s in the league, but he did in his workouts.  That was why he came from being an unknown to getting a ton of press.  He was huge and had a workout in front of scouts where he was knocking down three after three.  I think it may have been a DraftExpress write up, but that is too long ago for me to remember.

Either way, my point is that one great workout or one terrible workout is meaningless. If you've ever played this game on a competitive level, just think of it from your own perspective.  Think of the best practice you've ever had, then the worst practice you've ever had.  What would people say about your game if either of those workouts was all they saw.

I agree that workouts are overrated. But it's still impressive to see a 7'3 dude knocking down 3's, and workouts are more important for Qi because it's so hard to judge him from his CBA stats.

It's hard to imagine Zhou Qi in the context of the NBA, but this helps a little. Here's a nice video of Zhou Qi (and his frontcourt-mate Andray Blatche!) taking some punishment from Will Bynum and our old friend Yi Jianlian.

Yi is the three-time CBA MVP, by the way.

Call me cynical, but I think somebody is going to take Qi ahead of where he should be for the team apparel sales alone.

Mike

Wouldn't say cynical, any team that takes Zhuo better have their Chinese marketing strategy on point to utilize the kind of hype that a guy like him could draw.

The first time Yao and Yi played against eachother the game drew more Global viewers than the superbowl... and it was a morning game in China!

zhou looked absolutely lost in that clip. it will be interesting to see how he turns out.

by the way, yi is the family name for yi jianlian. and zhou is the family name for zhou qi. in china, family names come before given names.

Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

Frankly, this looks like a Globetrotters-Generals game. The CBA is awful.

Zhou Qi's stats are not convincing. Only 15ppg in Chinese League. Even Haddadi and Maxiell both going for around 20ppg. Zhou Qi only takes 9 shots a game. It doesn't sound like they give him the ball much. Doesn't sound like a capable scorer. His non-scoring stats look solid. Nearly 10rpg (34mpg), 3bpg, near 1:1 AST:TO ratio. His defense looked fairly awful in that clip. No positional sense. Guessing he gets most of those rebs & blks from his sheer size and length. Doesn't look like he has much explosive quickness or leaping ability.

I may be biased, but I hate the "can't teach size" drafting principle with a passion. It has resulted in so many busts...

You realize that Manute Bol was 7'7 and weighed 200 lbs, right? :P

Thus the Maker comparison.  If he loses a little weight, he can get there.
