With draft picks traded to us

Do we choose when to use it?

For example, the mavs pick I think was 1-7 protected
As they are in the playoffs, we can currently use it this year

However, if ainge did not see anyone he wanted to draft, could he not use it this year but then use it next year or does he have to use it the first year that the pick is not within protection range?

We cannot choose when the picks convey, so we get them this year. He can use them or trade them.
