To answer the OP's question, I'd say the more competetive the team is, the more attractive it is to Horford.

Also, whether or not he "deserves" the max is kind of irrelevant because he's going to get it from somebody. There will be a number of teams that will offer it to him, including Atlanta. This summer, he'll be the best big man on the market so if the Celtics want to upgrade their front court through free agency, this is how they'd do it.

You want to hand out a Max deal on a Big? Go get Whiteside.
This is a fantastic example of what not to do instead of signing Horford.

Yup.

I wouldn't be mad if we pay Horford the max, but I won't be elated either. Whiteside on the other hand, I'd be furious... his play this year has not justified a max contract, and if you're hoping that he gets better, you're in for a bad surprise when he gets paid and his work ethic vanishes.

I agree.  I think Whiteside is the ultimate "get paid and coast" guy.  He already has a reputation for chasing stats, and he really isn't a good fundamental defender.  (30th among centers in RPM, 24th in defensive RPM).

Make that three of us.

Agree.  I think Horford is somewhat overrated here, but if I'm choosing between Horford and Whiteside then there is no choice.

Horford's age and injury history concern me a bit, and I don't really like him as a guy relied upon to score points.  But if you need a guy to anchor your defense and just provide complementary offense, then I think he's a great fit for that.

i agree with koz here. whiteside has some great shot blocking abilities and can rebound. but honestly, after that he has a severely limited repertoire of skills. he doesnt seem to fit the CBS ideal of being able to spread the floor and play multiple roles to help the team.

if you think sully's outside game is frustrating, wait until you see whiteside.

examples of limitations include:

- in a career that spans 121 nba games, he has a TOTAL of 36 assists. he is a black hole on offense and will not be helpful with CBS' pace and space approach.

- he is a career 60% free throw shooter.

- this year, 80% of his fg attempt come from within the paint. he needs to be right next to the basket to score. and i do mean right next to it.

- he has attempted ZERO 3 pointers in his career. none, nada, zip. forget stretching the floor with him in the line up.

whiteside offers some interesting skills, but he seems to offer little aside from those skills. honestly, horford under CBS would flourish and help the celtics more in my opinion.

Yes, because he's looking for the max, someone will pay him, and he hasn't shown enough to deserve it here.

Horford has not looked "max-worthy" to me.  His value has gone down I would say while the Celtics cache as a franchise has probably gone up.  I think he has hurt his chances of signing with us more than it has hurt our chances to sign him.

I maintain my position that I prefer to let someone else overpay for Horford.

This series should certainly make us question why we would offer Horford the max this summer. Whilst he has outplayed Sullinger I certainly don't think he's been as effective as Amir. Tying him up for 4 years at the max would be a risky decision.

Also signing Horford is not going to sway the boat for Durant. If he comes here it's because of Brad, Isaiash etc. not because we sign Horford.

Honestly don't care if we hurt our chances to get horford. Don't want to severely overpay for a center whose strengths have faded and who is probably never going to be as good again as he is right now (isn't saying a ton.)

Let someone else give him 2x as much as cousins is making right now. Pass

If it brings us a better player then do it.  Don't max Horford as your only major addition, though.

Cousins and Marc Gasol are choice 1A and 1B for me. There aren't many centers Id want that are UFA. Drummond is a RFA but the Pistons will match a max offer for him

I'd rather have Horford and the Nets pick than Gasol or Cousins.  And it would cost this year's Nets pick at a minimum.

I think more or less. Heinson's comment and this entire series has been extremely chippy. I haven't watched much of the other series but I think this series is more chippy than others with all the flagrants. We're the only series that's worth watching as we are tied 2-2. Dennis Schroeder is instigating every play.

Cousins comes with a well documented set of red flags. As for Gasol, he's a year and a half older than Horford, has a similar checkered past with injuries, and puts up very similar numbers without the same floor stretching ability Horford has shown this season. I love Gasol but I'm not seeing how he's a better option than Horford, who we'd (potentially) be able to sign outright, as opposed to Gasol or Cousins, for whom we'd have to trade, which means giving up assetts.
