So Adam silver seems to have changed his tune and now wants to change the hack a player strategy. I personally am pretty disappointed about this. I get that it gets boring some times when teams are hacking drummond and jordan, but I strongly disagree with the premise of changing the rules because these guys lack a legitimate basketball skill. Both Jordan and Drummond are incredible rebounders and good defenders, but they do become a real liability to the point that their team can't play them in certain situations because they can't hit a foul shot.
To have this weakness just off-set by a rule change seems really strange and instantly makes them much better players. The only thing I can think of that was similar was when the NBA moved in the three point line and, if memory serves correct, that was a disaster.

He said they're still figuring out how to best deal with it, so there will most likely be some restrictions on it rather than an outright ban.

Deandre Jordan's value becomes much greater if some variation of this rule goes into effect. I'd love to nab him if the Clips decide to go another direction.

Avery is not real great at dribbling. Can we change the rules and just let him run with the ball? He'd be a lot more effective.
Once you are labeled 'the best' you want to stay up there, and you can't do it by loafing around.

Someone in the comment roll said it way better than I could:

Quote
Also NBA should change the rules to prevent three pointers, since some people can't make them... and prevent dunks, since some players are short.

The NBA is teh worst.

Just some brainstorming:  Each team is allowed four fouls before going into the penalty.  The penalty is 2 free throws for any foul.  It's supposed to help the team getting fouled, but this isn't actually the case any more.  It's now often an advantage for the fouling team when they are losing a close game.  It has the opposite of the intended effect.  Why not allow the team that was fouled the option of shooting the free throws or ignoring the penalty rule and passing it in as they would have without the rule?  It seems like a simple solution.

I will be very happy when they do.  Never in the spirit of the game.  I also think it will greatly help out some of the better true big men to stay dominant in the league.  I think that's important with how perimeter oriented things are otherwise.

I believe you could just simply have the option to pass the ball in and solve it.

But how??

Less than 5 min play you can't deliberately foul a player without the ball?? And if u do, then what??

You see how dumb this becomes

There Is no way around it

I'm glad they are considering changing the rule

But what about at the end of the game when you have to 'play the foul game'? The team needs to go to the line in some situations.

I don't like anything that rewards the "bad" player too much, but maybe something like:

8th foul in 1 quarter = choice of 2 shots or possession (no shot clock reset)

Would allow teams to deal differently with end of game intentional fouls, not just hack-a-shaq scenarios. For example, if you are down by 3 and intentionally fouled with 5 seconds left, you could take the ball out of bounds and draw up a 3PT play instead of being obligated to shoot free throws. If you're in the bonus with e.g. 2 minutes left you know the other team can only hack-a-shaq a couple times at most.

Agree with the OP, its not like this rule applies to every single big man, it only applies to a handful of exceptionally poor free throw shooters.

its like being a bad defender, then havin the league change offensive rules becuz they see u gettin burned in isolations.

"it slows down the game/makes it boring".

well whatever blame the poor free throw shooter for bein a poor free throw shooter. not the other team for takin advantage of a weakness.

It's something that is not in the spirit of the game but I really don't like the idea of changing a fundamental of the game so you don't even need to practice it and have zero weakness of being on the court.
