  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Real bummer, right? I mean one or two calls go the other way and we are talking about being up 1-0 and stealing one on the road.

I don't even really care about these particular calls. The early fouls called on the Cs were preposterous and led to the team having to be ultra-careful despite typically playing a very aggressive style [on defense]. Somehow we almost managed to breakthrough that discrepancy, as well.

I guess we can at least take solace in the fact that the refs have publicly acknowledged screwing up and hopefully that will lead to a few breaks on our end.

To be fair the Celtics did commit a lot of silly fouls...but there's no doubt the officiating sucked.

Boston got a lot of no-calls when players were fouled going to the rim, and the Hawks seemed to be getting away with murder all game long.

Some of the foul disparity was justified, but a lot of it was down to bad calls.

One reason (among others) that modern NBA refereeing is so p--- poor is that the modern
ref has zero feel for the game.  And no apparent allegiance to the game of basketball.  In other words,
there is a basic lack of respect for the game and their role in the game.

Instead, there is a bizarre list of priorities swirling through the head of the modern ref.  Much of it is fear based.  Here are some descriptors of the mental landscape of the modern ref.  These are not necessarily conscious motives listed below.  It's more that they are captive to a bunch of foggy fear based ruminations...

1. Stars or home team loses = bad = lose money
2. Fighting = bad.  Family sport.  Clean. Must be clean.
3. Call foul when in doubt.  Must keep control at all times.  No craziness or wild long drawn out plays.
4. Stars are above the game.  Don't anger them it looks bad.  Family sport.
5. Home team star = God.
6. If I blow my whistle it means I'm in control of the game.

Another concerning article I saw is this one:

Supposedly the new tiebreaker rules should have seen the Celtics take the #3 seed, rather than #5.

We should be playing Charlotte, not Atlanta.

Silver lining: The refs will now have an eye out for Horford setting illegal screens.

This is actually a pretty good point.

The loyalty to the officials is noble, but Jim Capers, Curly and Larry were terrible all night long. They were definitely a factor in the game.

Who? Lol. I had never heard of these refs before
I could very well see the Hawks... starting Taurean Prince at the 3, who is already better than Crowder, imo.

The problem with these reports is that they only cover 1/24th of the game, so if four missed calls occurred during this tiny component of the overall game, how many truly happened over the course of the game? At one time during the game, there was a 14 foul disparity between the Hawks and the Celtics. That's unacceptable, especially because it's not like we were playing the Lakers who play no defense. The Hawks are every bit as physical defensively as us.

However, like someone said at least this will bring attention to the Horford illegal screens. Also, we generally tend to get a favorable whistle the next game after a game with a horrible whistle for us like game 1.
Recovering Joe Skeptic, but inching towards a relapse.

We should be playing Charlotte, not Atlanta.

Had they removed divisions entirely from tiebreakers, yes we shoulda been playing the hornets. But technically (and somewhat bafflingly) divisions are still ok for multi team tiebreakers. I honestly think we should just get rid of divisions entirely. What purpose do they serve? We already have conferences.

And also, to be fair, it wasn't the refs who admit to missed calls.

It was the NBA admitting that the refs missed the calls.

when you stand around the three point line bombing shots, it is pretty easy to see why you would have less fouls going your way than the other team.
