There's no question.

Making the ECF is just a date with LeBron, which wasn't much fun last year and probably wouldn't be much fun this year, either.

Winning the lotto means getting a potential superstar locked up long term for cheap.  That could mean reaching the ECF and perhaps beyond for multiple seasons in the future.

My heart wants to disagree; my head agrees strongly.

Hey man. Why not the best of both worlds? Beat LeBron in 4 AND win 1st pick!
I could very well see the Hawks... starting Taurean Prince at the 3, who is already better than Crowder, imo.

you vs. the guy she tells you not to worry about

That's tough.  I want to instinctively say "lotto"...

Here's what it depends on, to me.

How much of a difference will it make to Kevin Durant if Boston is swept in the first round, makes it to round 2, or makes it to the ECF?

I get that a trip to ECF means a possible trip to the Finals, but I'm assuming you are saying ECF would be the last stop.

Regardless, my guess is winning the lotto is better for Boston.  We either keep Ben Simmons, or have a god-tier asset to lure a sidekick for Durant with.

I'm pretty sure having the #1 pick in hand, either drafting Simmons or trading it for an established superstar (Cousins I guess?) would mean a lot more than getting drubbed by the Cavs in the ECF.

Most of us around here agree the Celts as is aren't a contender.  If we agree on that, why would NBA players feel differently, even if the Celts go farther than expected in the playoffs?

Add Simmons (or Cousins) to the mix, and that perception probably changes.

Either way, I don't think we're getting Durant.  Maybe Horford or Dwight.  But if we get the #1 pick, we'll be in amazing shape regardless.

The only problem I have here is, the way things are now, C's are most likely to finish #4 or #5, meaning they'd meet the Cavs in the 2nd round, so to be in the ECF means the C's most likely already beat the Cavs (or Detroit) in the 2nd round.

If it's a clean shot in the ECF against against a non-Cavs team, I'm going with that, though I know that's not what the OP is asking.

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

Not to hijack your thread but what is the question was, make the finals (and lose) or get the #1 pick?  That would mean potentially beating lebron.

Would it make a difference?  Is it too far fetched?

Given the 2 options, it's winning the #1 pick and that's pretty easy for me. I want to watch this Celtics team go as far as they possibly can but it's not about going to conference finals it's about winning championships. Getting the #1 pick, to me, means a great shot at bringing in a homegrown superstar and championships for years to come.

I think there needs to be more clarity.
Like others have mentioned if we're making the ECF we have already beat the Cavs, which would be great.
What other perks come with making the ECF, do we attract a star free agent? Or do we just make the ECF to lose, then strike out in free agency and wind up with either the 3 or 4th pick?

Also keep in mind, if we beat the Cavs in the second round that team gets blown up and the likelihood increases of Lebron creating his super team.

I guess my vote would be the #1 pick... but its hard.

ECF would be great for this season, winning the lottery could great for the next 10-12 seasons.
