its been estimated that anywhere between 60-80% of the players in the NBA smoke weed regularly according to multiple players.  Recently it was said that 10-30% do drugs harder than weed like ecstasy.

I have personally witnessed players smoking weed before even exiting the arena parking lot.

It's not alarming until a player fails a drug test a 3rd time - like in the case of Al Jefferson this year.  And even then it was just a 5 game slap on the wrist that will not prevent the former 3rd team All-NBA player from contributing for a playoff team this year.  The first two times a player is caught with weed are kept secret.  You only know if it happened a 3rd time, because of the tell-tale 5 game suspension.

Noel has the potential to be a DPOY some day.  I can't really judge him for this without acknowledging that more than half of the guys on our own team are probably getting high regularly.  As Mbunge alluded on the previous page by name dropping jared Sullinger - there's gotta be some explanation that dude couldn't keep the weight off.  Munchies.

Anyways, if any of this story is even true, it doesn't even necessarily mean Noel was directly the cause of the damage.  From reading that, my first guess is that it's damage from parties.  He's a 21 year old millionaire living in a baller house. I assume he has friends.

At least we know he's trying to stay hydrated with all that Gatorade. I see this news as a plus. Weed is good for stress and losing. Gatorade has electrolytes, smart kid.

Honestly, I am a bit in the middle on this.

I think if you look at all this and take it as a reason to not go after Noel, then that's reading too much into it.  From what I've seen he seems to have a good motor, seems to work hard, and seems to be a pretty good team-mate.  If the skills he brings to the table can significantly improve your team, then you don't say no just because of things like this.

On the other hand, I also think that the people who completely dismiss it as being completely irrelevant and no big deal are also unrealistic.  Of course this stuff says something about his character.  It's a little concerning, in all honestly, and it's something you consider to a degree because it shows insight into the type of person he is, and some of those habits may in time translate into the locker room.

So put simply, I think the best reaction is that you take all of this into consideration - but if you get the right deal for the guy, you still take it.

I remember Chad Ford saying a year or so ago that Noel had character issues or locker room issues or something of the like. He didn't over any specifics but this seems to corroborate that some.

At 21, Nerlans is averaging 11 points and 8 rebounds a game.

At 21, Jared Sullinger averaged 13.3 points and 8.1 rebounds a game.

How many people were beating down Ainge's door to trade for 21-year-old Sully?  How many were offering veteran all stars or top 5 lottery picks?

21-year-old Noel: 52% 2 PF fg, 1.8 assists, 1.7 steals, 1.5 blks, 2.4 turnovers.

21-year-old Sully: 47% 2 pt fg, 1.6 assists, .5 steals, .7 blks, 1.6 turnovers.

So, better shooting percentage for Noel but balanced out by Sully being the one who can, you know, actually shoot a jump shot.  Assists basically a wash but Noel has more turnovers.  Noel's steals and block numbers look a lot better, but what do we see with more advanced analytics?

Noel - PER 16.2, Offensive Win Share .1, Defensive Win Share 2.6.

Sully - PER 16.4, Offensive Win Share 1.9, Defensive Win Share 2.

So, Noel is the better defender but terrible on offense.  Sully is still a reasonably good defender, comparatively, and is practically Michael Jordan on offense when compared to Noel.

Yeah, I'm sure GMs are just lining up to give Philly anything they want for Noel.

The "threat" seems more like a dumb prank.  The sensationalistic writing makes this sound like a big deal, but the pics were underwhelming.

Agreed. I suspect many of us who spent time working as RAs in college wont find this story particularly surprising.

It's not surprising, but he does come off as a jerk. Also, he seems very careless, haha. The last thing I want to point out is Noel's stock dropped in the draft because of the people he surrounded himself with, not the ACL injury. My reference is Bill Simmons draft podcast with Ryen Russielo.

This isn't the kind of stuff that you dismiss. He is playing a professional sport. Drug use and indiscretion of it is crazy. Also threats no matter if they weren't serious are still threats and to the other person is serious. He could have easily stayed in contact with landlords and got things repair as they broke. This is very immature and dumb. I can only hope and speculate that this isn't his home but a place he rented for his friends. If this is Noel himself then I don't want him on this team till he gets more grown up no matter his numbers. A professional should have his personal life together at the very least legally.

I think if you disqualified guys who smoked up a little during the season, the NBA would have a hard time filling rosters.

Not really. The damages seem inflated to me. He has a right to contest them.

He obviously owes something. I suppose if ultimately he's a total deadbeat and does nothing to make things right, then it's an issue. I've dealt with too many landlords professionally and personally to take their word on anything, though. Just from my experience, their collective character ranks somewhere around the same level as "strip club owner".
