It’s been said that Chicago’s Jimmy Butler would be a good fit here, but multiple sources are telling the Herald that the Celts did, in fact, make a strong move for the 6-foot-7 wing.

According to one source that had at least one player who could have been involved in the potential transaction, the Celtics were willing to give up two first-round draft picks this year — the unprotected pick from the Nets and Dallas’ choice, which is protected 1-through-7.

I love Marcus Smart. Hes my favorite Celtic and I think he will have a huge impact on whatever team he plays for.

That said, Id trade Brk '16 + Smart + 2 firsts for Jimmy.

As above - I love Smart, but if I had a chance to make this deal, I couldn't say no. 

Butler gives us that go-to scorer we've been desperately needing AND he's an outstanding defensive player too. 

With Thomas, Butler and Crowder we would have (easily) one of the best backcourts in the NBA.  I think that trio gives Curry, Thompson and Barnes a VERY hard time.  With that core in place I think we could beat the Raptors and Cavs in a 7 game series...and I think we'd be a one quality defensive big man away from being able to seriously compete with the Warriors and Spurs.

Giving up Smart and the Brooklyn pick is a big risk, but Butler is worth the gamble.

that report doesn't seem to suggest the trade was ever on the table.  Going after a player means nothing. We went after love.  We went after Melo.   We went after cousins.  Supposedly we came close to landing Okafor but philly backed out.

I get the love for Butler but I'd want to team him with Smart, not give up Smart to get him.  I'd listen to requests for anyone else at this point but if I'm trading Smart, I want someone better than Butler.  I'm not saying Butler's a slouch by any means but if I'm moving the 2 best trade chips the C's have, it's got to be for a second-team all NBA player.  Butler's good but not at that level

Butler is a top 15-20 player in the league , and was in the running for MVP before he got injured.

Yes, I would have to.

Simmons could become Tim Duncan 2.0, he could become Lamar Odom 2.0, or he might never become as good as either.

The same is true of Smart.  We really don't know yet how good he will or won't be.

Butler is a known commodity.  He is arguably the best SG in the NBA and is a proven two-way player, so I'd take that over a potential pick and a promising but as yet unproven prospect.

That's conjecture. All reports that tied Okafor to the Celtics were ones speculating that he was the "mystery man" that Danny made a "significant offer" for that the other team considered for a few days before backing out. If Jimmy Butler was the mystery player and Okafor wasn't, there's not one insider or knowledgable reporter that flat says the Celtics were "close to getting Okafor" without referencing a speculative piece of journalism.

If we get a top 2 pick, I still trade it for Butler. He's young and locked into a cap-friendly deal, and he perfectly fits the character and needs of the team (a competently-sized SG). That, and he matches up better age-wise with the rest of the team. (I believe he's 26/27, just like Isaiah.)

Butler is awesome, and the trade offer sounds legit . . . not a bad deal for either side.

We've got so many bodies . . .. we can only handle so many draft picks. Not upset with our situation though. Keeping Smart, the lotto pick and 2 other first rounders (plus 4 2nds) gives Danny all sorts of angles to play this summer.

Somewhere I read a story about Mark Walburg and Butler being very good friends. I'll bet he would love to see Butler in Boston, I know I would also.

I have to say, it would definitely increase our chances of getting a big free agent exponentially.
