Why on Earth would Atlanta expect a likely top 5 pick for 2 months of Horford's contract? I mean sure, shoot for that first, but if not getting it is really a dealbreaker why even bother?
I imagine their thinking all along was "Well, we're fine this year if we do nothing. Al might walk, we need to trade Jeff eventually. Why not see if we can get some team to make us a crazy offer?"
It's crazy how many teams (reportedly) went that route. Apparently Miami talked with us about Whiteside but wanted the BRK pick. And we don't even get Bird Rights with him!
Almost feels like a curse having that juicy of a draft asset - our many other picks and the handful of players we're willing to give up seem a lot less attractive by contrast.
Other teams know a couple things
(a) The Celts have more picks than they could ever use
(b) Danny Ainge likes to trade and isn't really that excited about drafting guys.
So, of course, they're eager to see just how willing he is to make a splash in the here and now by trading his best draft assets.
It helps that the East, and the NBA in general, is so stratified this year that teams that are still "in it" for the playoffs are very willing to kick the tires on making a deal that makes them worse in the short term if they can find a team willing to go all-in.
Luckily, Danny is not a fool.
