Unsurprising, but relieving.

Draft: 8 first rounders in next 5 years.

Cap space: $24 mil.

Some people get a dollar in their pocket and they just have to spend it.  I think a lot of those people all post on here, that's all I will say.

Keep in mind, this is Woj's speculation.  It's not based on sources.

My speculation is the same.

IF that picks ends being Simmons (or top 2) it should yield more in a trade than Love or Horford.

Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism

I certainly wouldn't deal the pick for Horford and would very much hesitate on trading it for Love, but your sentiment works both ways. Some people want to spend that dollar on a proven commodity because it might turn into Thabeet, Derrick Williams, or Milicic...and these are former #2 picks. Let's think about what might happen if it drops to 5 or 6.

What I am saying is, these people are actually much more conservative in their approach than the people hoping to win the lottery (literally and figuratively).

Good point.

Why should we move the Brooklyn pick for Horford considering that he's going to be a FA this summer.

It wouldn't be unheard of. The Cavs moved Wiggins for free agent to be Kevin Love.

In any trade like that, it all depends upon what the player's agent is saying behind closed doors.

True!
But I wouldn't compare the Cavs situation to ours. They were in a "win now" situation, which kind of made it hard for them to wait a whole year so they could sign Love in free agency while keeping Wiggins on their roster. We obviously aren't gunning for the championship this year (I believe so), which is why we could wait another 3 to 4 months in order to sign Horford and keep our Brooklyn pick ;D!

Honestly this is super obvious.  You dont trade the potential number 1 pick in the draft for a half season rental.  That would be absurd.  Is anyone even suggesting that other then maybe ATL and HOU fans?

While that assertion is true in regards to Horford, it isn't applicable to Love, who is under contract through 2020.

I would probably not give up the BKN 16 pick for Horford -- even if his agent confirm in back-door channels that he will sign with the Celtics -- because officially he would be a rental and I doubt any _other_ team would give up such a price for him.   In other words, while (with a commitment to resign) he's probably worth that pick, that would seem like a big overpay based on the market.

In Love's case, I would definitely trade it.  You would be giving up what is most likely a 4, 5 or 6 pick for a player who MIGHT someday maybe if you are lucky turn out to be an all-star player for Kevin Love, in his age 27-31 seasons.   That's a no-brainer.

All that said, I'd prefer the 'trade for Horford but retain the BKN16 pick' scenario slightly over acquiring Love mainly because (a) I really like Horford's game and think he'd be a great fit PLUS (b) we'd still have that pick.

In other words, I value:

Love > BKN 16 ... but ..
Horford + BKN 16   > Love

But my preference there is only slightly.  If Danny decided to pull the trigger and give that pick up for Love, I'd be all-in.

And we can't control whether either Horford OR Love is actually moved in trade or what price the other teams will value them at.

I am not going to hold my breath, expecting either deal to go through.
