I hate Dwight as much as many CBers here. But if we can get him for cheap without touching our core, we're in for a possible deep playoff run. I'm willing to spend 3/4 of our non-BKN 2016 picks since we can't afford to draft that many rookies in a single season.

And who said Dwight will be the leader? CBS will always be the leader or (IT,Crowder,Smart to some extent). Playing in Boston, Dwight won't have the pressure of "being a leader". He just have to play the role Brad has given him. And who knows? Smart and Crowder might lit a fire under his arse and infect him with the competitive aura they have. Rockets didn't have that type of player outside Ariza.

This makes it seem like the Rockets are the ones that leaked the rumor and Boston thought they were asking for too much.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

From Bulpett, linked above:

Quote
Team A calling Team B in recent weeks to ask if it would give up assets A, B and C for Player A — and being told, "No" — does not a negotiation make. Rather it makes for a pretty quick and fruitless phone call.

The implication here, I think, is that Daryl Morey called Ainge, not the other way around, and basically asked for a handful of the Celts' best assets in return for Dwight.

E.g.

Daryl: "Danny, would you consider trading Marcus Smart, one of your Brooklyn picks, and Kelly Olynyk, plus Lee's expiring, for Dwight?  You'd finally get that star you've been after!"

Danny: "Um, yeah, no, not a chance Daryl."
You’ll have to excuse my lengthiness—the reason I dread writing letters is because I am so apt to get to slinging wisdom & forget to let up. Thus much precious time is lost.

if Ainge trades any of the BKN picks and/or Smart for Dwight Howard he will lose all credibility as an intelligent business man.

It's always hard to know where these rumors come from but it seems like our front office rarely leaks trade discussions that actually wind up going somewhere.  This seems like the most likely interpretation to me, though I'm open to "Boston offers lowball, Houston counters with overpay, things kinda sputter out there".

Sounds totally plausible.

But what also could've happened is Morey asked for two non-Nets 1sts and Ainge still could've flat out refused just as a routine negotiating tactic. Conversely, if Morey asked for Smart, Olynyk, and a Nets 1st that might also just be a routine tactic of overshooting. The fact that any talking happened is more important than what kind. Morey and Ainge negotiating must be like sharks mating. A slow, cautious dance of two predators wary of each other.

There's no way any other team is going to offer Houston even a third of the value of Smart + Olynyk + Nets 1st. That's more than Orlando got for Howard at his peak, lol. Two weeks of media-leaked posturing later, Ainge and Morey will probably settle on something, because there won't be better options for either -- and that includes doing nothing, which neither wants to do.

Mannix on CSNNE just said (paraphrase): Talks did take place between the C's and Rockets, but the Rockets are looking for a godfather offer for him.

This is my Danny-as-evil-genius hope for the truth behind this story:

Danny called Morey asking about Howard and has engaged him in a negotiation that Ainge is going to be a real ball-buster about. Danny will just be a real unreasonable prick about what he would give up for Howard, such that no deal will come to pass. But on the way out the door Ainge mentions, off-hand, what about this other center? Capela? What'd you want for him?

Morey gives Ainge a reasonable price for Capela not knowing that AINGE WANTED CAPELA ALL ALONG! And Ainge gets a better price on the young kid with tons of upside than he would have if he had gone in asking for him upfront.

And we wind up with Clint Capela as our center of the future to put next to Ben Simmons.

The amount of excitement I cautiously carried with me throughout the day over this rumor is pretty pathetic.

Me: "Hey mom, things are great here. Guess what? We might trade for Dwight Howard."
Mom: "Really? Why?"

Me: "Hey [GF's name], we may get Dwight Howard. Sick, right? Shore up the 3 seed, maybe make a deep playoff run."
GF: "Oh. Yeah, cool. Isn't he like 50 now?"

Me: "We might get Dwight, dude. Lowball offer."
Brother: "Great. So we still suck?"

A used car with 3 months left on a very expensive lease.  It's cool though, you can sign a new, more expensive lease, unless the car decides to clownface its way over to somebody else's garage.

My last hope was that landing Dwight would somehow bring us together again/make them love me  :o
