What is lost here is that 3-point shot spreads the floor, allowing for there to be more post game. The lack of post game is not due to the existence of the 3-point shot, but rather a lack of good low post players or maybe poor playmaking, coaching.

You remove the 3-point shot, what you'll find is more defenses packing up the middle making it more difficult to have a post-up game.

What the 3-point shot did though is slowly kill of the importance of the mid-range game.

Agreed. I miss those midrange shots.

It was the hand-checking rule changes that killed post play. Made perimeter play much easier and more efficient.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I suppose I could get behind widening the arc, therefore getting rid of the corner three. I can't imagine getting rid of it altogether (or adding a four-point line). The three has become a legitimate integral part of the game - I'd hate to see it go.

No. I'm fine with the short corner as is, but I wouldn't want it to be that much shorter than straightaway.

The easy fix to the perimeter game we have now is to make the hand-checking rules looser again. It would also emphasize teams that can move the ball and get it to the guy shooting an open 3 as opposed to off-the-dribble shooters like Steph Curry who no one can defend with the rules we currently have.

I agree with this completely. I don't think most people realize the impact that these subtle rule changes have had to the game the past few years. Modifying how hand checking and post play fouls are called has basically taken away the emphasis from low post play and big men and has placed it fully on smaller, faster, perimeter oriented players.

Same here. Imagine Bradley and Smart playing defense before the new hand-checking rules.
I just had a Bradgasm and a Smartgasm at the same time. Not sure I'll be able to walk for an hour.

The one rule I would change is this:

Give an assist to a player--if the pass goes to a guy who gets fouled--and he sinks both free throws...I always thought it was unfair for the passer to get no assist on a fouled player.
Larry Bird was Greater than you think.

Nope, but i'd be willing to add a four point line around four or so feet back from the three-point line  ;D

Antoine?  Is that you? ;-)

I agree...many of Rondo's assist in the big three era was lost because he made a brilliant howd he do that pass in the box only to be negated because the recepient missed the shot but only bec he was fouled...2 FT later he scores 2 points but the brilliant pass was not acknowledged anymore..this rule allows more counted assists thus likely increasing league ave of pass first PGd's

Not opposed to a 4 point shot...many hail mary shots should have been accounted for 4 points...id say as long as its beyond the midcourt then it should be worth 4 points...but to discourage people from taking them for no reason..id make it so that its only worth 4 points if taken by a team thats behind by more than 10 points at any point of the game hence if their lucky they may be able to catch the leading team....also half court heaves at the buzzers should count as4 point shots regardless of whether a team is leading or not...this should create some nasty rallys in the future.

They need to go back to the old illegal defense rule.  That's what made the whole game about the three point shot.  Now when ever the ball goes near the paint all five guys collapse on it.  Hence no post game and very little mid range game.
