How about Sullinger, Jerebko, and the Dallas 1st for Thad Young? 

Makes Nets worse this year, gives them additional future assets. 

Makes Celts better this year, gives them a productive power forward locked up at less annual money than Sullinger is likely to demand next summer.

Generally I agree, but making small maintenance moves like this and setting the team up to acquire a star aren't mutually exclusive.

If anything, I'd say a cost-controlled Thad Young probably has more trade value than Jared Sullinger.

Some might cringe at giving up a 1st or a 27 year old veteran who isn't a huge upgrade, but on the other hand, we have too many first round picks as it is.

I'd rather go after Terrence Jones than Thad Young.

Thad Young is a little old. Late 20s. He has peaked as a player. A good starter but not special. I don't think he changes our team much at this stage. I prefer Terrence Jones because he is younger, still improving and I think he has a higher ceiling than Thaddeus Young. He is also likely available at a lower price due to Rockets panic over their W-L record.

As for value, I think Thaddeus Young is only worth a mid first round pick (15-19 range). I wouldn't pay any higher than that for him. I think that trade package mentioned above is too much for Young .... unless Sully is in it because you don't want to pay him + Dallas pick is protected in case they fall out of playoff spots. I guess it is okay in that scenario.

Edit: I have to keep reminding myself Dallas are in a playoff spot. Shocked they are there.

I am not a fan of Sully but Sully, JJ, and a 1st for Young is a very bad move. JJ is flexibility in trades, Sully is 80% of Young + is RFA so there is some control, and the Mavs pick is going to be in the 19-24 range which is still good trade value for a pick. Young will also take up cap space in the way the Bruins blew their cap space. I'd pass on that deal.

Thing is, I just don't trust Terrence Jones to (a) stay healthy or (b) develop any kind of reliable range.

Will he end up making less per year than Thad Young is making for the next 3 seasons, despite those issues?  Possibly not.

This is a good point.  My position on this is that I don't really care about the Celts' cap space.  I don't think any major pieces are coming here in FA until we get a major piece by trade or the draft first.

Bad way to look at cap space. It is not only for FAs but also absorbing a player and giving the other team a TE. It is another trade chip/ advantage.

You know Thad Young was traded for Kevin Garnett STRAIGHT UP last year right? He is not that valuable. Huge overpay and giving the one team we don't want to win additional assets. Dumb.
