Grousbeck: ‘I’d like to trade the Nets pick’

Wyc Grousbeck appeared on Felger and Mazz early in the evening to talk shop about the Celtics, take listener calls and give away tickets.

The big item was Wyc saying that he’d be willing to trade the Nets’ unprotected first rounder ‘to speed up the rebuild.’

On Stevens:

    Are we ready now to attract a marquee free agent? We want to be that destination. Brad’s the big part of that puzzle. Guys need to respect him around the league. Players need to want to come and play for him. I would love to give Brad Stevens the chance to coach an all-time great player. [a free agent] is choosing us for how we play and who is coaching us and their a chance to win a ring. They’re  not choosing us for the weather or the taxes.

Interesting article. There isn't a direct quote from Wyc, but I wouldn't be surprised if he said this. Hes always been a owner who's sort of a fan at the same time. While, he wants to see success from the Celtics, he also understands that as a owner that fans are impatient and at times want to see immediate gratification/progression.

Wonder who he is talking about? This definitely raises some eyebrows to some curious GM's.

I hope it isn't Melo though. I wouldn't give Melo up for the Nets pick, maybe a future Nets protected 1-7.

Wyc “Fireworks” Grousbeck decided to spend his Thursday afternoon talking to Felger and Mazz–and an assortment of call-in listeners. He talked at length about building a team as opposed to tanking and hoping, and offered these thoughts on keeping the Nets pick or dealing it:

I think only some fans are impatient.  in my experience, that's typically casual or bandwagon fans.  The majority of fans (in my experience) that support the team through good and bad times are patient as long as they can see that the franchise has a gameplan to become contenders (if they aren't already).

I'm not completely against trading that Nets pick but it's got to be for someone who's a top player in the league.  That pick this year could enable us to get a young player that could be a franchise cornerstone

Now if anyone listened to this could please confirm if the quotes are indeed true, if so, then I believe the only players that are going to be on the trade block potentially could be Cousins, Durant, and Melo. I want the first two, and if we can't get Durant, I would like Melo, but as stated before, I personally would never throw the Nets pick this year for Melo. Dallas pick, and maybe 1 future Nets pick protected is the highest I would go.

I know you don't like DMC.

But its okay, once DMC comes to beantown, you'll see how different of a player he is.

I consider DMC and Durant to be one of the top players at their position in the league.

And I have to honestly believe most GM's would give up that pick for a chance at DMC.

Grousbeck also fielded a question about whether Jared Sullinger might be a trade candidate this season. Any owner would probably answer that question with some sort of "no," but, after saying trade season has not yet arrived, Grousbeck gave Sullinger plenty of support.

"We really think Jared is maybe, arguably our best player right now," he said. "He ought to feel good about being in a Celtics uniform."

Interesting.

Grousbeck has always liked Sully, and never really thrown him under the bus, although he has expressed disappointment before about his conditioning. He seems very pleased with him this year, does it mean that hes going to be trade bait, or possible resigned candidate?

I mean can't really blame him. I understand. DMC is still a violate player, that at times gives up plays, but we'll see what happens close to the trade deadline. Maybe Ainge can figure out how to do a 3 way deal that helps out the Kings/Celtics.

i did, as well -- it was pretty good. i thought it was interesting how he repeatedly called Sully 'our best player this year'. to me, that's what an owner says when he's trying to prop up a guys trade value...

I don't think it's that much about going after someone in specific, it's more about who will be available. But it does sound like he's looking at someone with proven track record of production. Cousins is just too flaky, IMO. Sure, he'll fill up the stat sheet more often than not, but one day he'd do it with super efficiency, and the next day, he'll take a million of mostly bad shots to get there (similar to what he did against the Cs yesterday).

Wyc did mention that they expect to have 2 max slots this summer.I fully expect them to go after a dynamic player who can carry the team on his back, think Durant or Beal (LeBron is, of course, a pipe dream). I'm sure he'd look to add a premium big, too (think Drumomnd or Horford). I wouldn't really be disappointed with any combination of these four.  I don't think they'll spend major money on a lesser player.

A lineup featuring Smart, Bradley, Durant, Amir, and Drummond, with Thomas coming off the bench...mmmm, one can dream, right?

I think you'll have to define "proven talent" for me on this one.  Because that sounds like the philosophy that guided the Knicks for most of the 2000s.

If trading for a no-doubt perennial All-Star is an option, then I'm on board with trading the pick so long as we're assured of having the guy under control multiple years, with a good chance of re-signing him. 

Anything less than that, and I think it becomes a lot harder to justify given where we are at in the rebuild.

I think they've had plenty of chances to trade picks for players that were less than no-doubt perennial allstars, and it hasn't happened. I don't see any reason to worry that the front office suddenly changed their mind -- especially in view of the fact that we can actually sign those players with cap space these days, if we so desired.

I agree that he is impatient and that it is not good.

Last year it was floated that he and CBS wanted the team to make the playoffs and that Danny didn't. As we've discussed before, we didn't want a full-fledged tank, we just wanted to NOT make the playoffs. Making the playoffs cost us Winslow or Turner.

Huge opportunity missed so Wyc can sell out for two more games and CBS can "feel good" about making the playoffs?

VERY shortsighted. Sadly, many choose immediate gratification over long-term gain.

Wyc got spoiled by Danny pulling rabbits (KG and Allen) out of a hat. The stars were aligned correctly, and we had the assets to pounce. We now have the assets, we just need the stars (pardon the pun) to align correctly.
