Missed the game tonight. What got into Olynyk?

I see improved athleticism, quickness, and reaction/awareness this year. That's made him better defensively, especially in help defense.

Also, he desperately needs to wear his hair the way he did yesterday...

He got some open looks early, then got hot and knocked down a bunch of shots.

When Kelly doesn't think, when he just plays, he does fine.

The D was atrocious, which helped him get into a groove and become more aggressive later on when it wasn't quite as bad.

The outside shot will come and go based on confidence, his playing time, and how much he is used.  I was really encouraged by his second Dirk one leg fade.  He got called for a travel on the first one by the ref furthest away which was questionable, but it was the same slow thinking KO making six ridiculously slow moves in the paint before taking the shot. 

The second one however looked like a legit NBA go to move.  He dribble down one or two dribbles backing his guy down until he got in position and went straight for his shot.  No hesitation.  That is what KO needs to do, make quick decisive moves.  If he'd stick to that I think he could be really good because he shoots that shot really well, it is going to be a pain to block, and if doubles come KO is a great passer already.

This guy Kozlodoev reminds me of a strict but fair teacher. So when he says Kelly Olynyk has figured out stuff on defense, that makes me even more confident he is on the right track.

In one or two years, Kelly Olynyk could be the new Avery Bradley with even the most cynical admitting Bradley looks very good at basketball right now.

KO is a rich man's version of Josh McRoberts and I've come to terms with that.  Any team can use a guy like that, and sometimes he has nights like last night.

KO is a rich man's version of Josh McRoberts and I've come to terms with that.  Any team can use a guy like that, and sometimes he has nights like last night.

Except Kelly's a way better offensive player than McBob.  He has considerably more skills in his arsenal.  That's probably why he averages about six more points per 36 minutes for his career.

He just made some open shots against an absent D. Maybe the angle to take with KO is to encourage him to simplify the entire game for himself. He looks to overthink everything, when in reality, if he played aggressive defense and knocked down spot-up 3s with consistency (and at a decent volume), he'd be a gem for any team in the league.

All his other intangibles (e.g., court vision, passing) are icing on the cake... if he did those two things consistently, he'd make our team better. Gotta make the job easy for him if you want him to succeed, I think... he may be 'cerebral' to a fault out there, at this point.

Sorry I disagree with that approach. Olynyk made some really excellent passes to enable easy shots for teammates. He also pulled down some timely rebounds. His cerebral skills should not be wasted by turning him into a 3-and-D guy.

That said, when KO is knocking down threes, he reminds me a bit of Larry...

No apologies needed. I agree with the premise that it wouldn't make sense to limit KO, and that wouldn't be the intention. The idea is to break the game down into smaller pieces for him, that would be easier to digest (and also ensure short-term success, fostering confidence in a guy with seeming confidence issues), with the goal of making incremental improvements over time. People that are overly-cerebral can easily lose sight of the big picture and hinder themselves unnecessarily. He just strikes me as that type of player. So having smaller, more manageable goals in working towards a complete package would be ideal in my opinion.

I said a "rich man's version," after all.  And it really isn't meant to be a dig on Kelly.  Josh McRoberts is a really valuable role player whose impact goes far beyond the box score.

Kelly has a lot more offensive talent, I just don't expect him to suddenly turn into a consistent scorer after he's been very similar for going on three seasons now.  He will occasionally have big nights, but other nights he'll just be a facilitator and help out in other less obvious ways. 

I'm not expecting him to turn into a star or anything, but I think he'll be a useful part of the team's rotation as long as he's here.

Sure, and Paul Millsap is a rich man's Carl Landry.  Marc Gasol is a rich man's Cole Aldrich.  Jimmy Butler is a rich man's Corey Brewer . . .
