Curry has 5 games this season with at least 8 3-pointers made. Ray Allen and Reggie Miller combined only had 6 regular-season games with at least 8 threes in their careers.
He's taking 11 per game though, lol.
No one would ever say Curry isn't an amazing outside shooter, already one of the best of all time, but there are some other guys who didn't play in today's type of NBA (namely, Miller) who could be doing many of the same things.
With all due respect to Reggie Miller, but no. It's not "today's NBA" that lets Curry literally take multiple 28-30 footers a game. It's because Curry is just that good. Heck, for a three seasons in the prime of Miller's career, the three point line was nearly 2 feet closer than it is now. The NBA got rid of illegal defense for zone defenses, meaning it's much easier to double Curry as well. And Reggie is a proud dude, I'm sure, but I don't think for a second he believes he could do what Curry is doing.
Sorry, but era definitely matters.
Advanced stats changed the game. No coach would let Reggie take that many 3s because that wasn't how the game was played.
For instance, go back even a little further to Bird. That guy averaged less than 2 3 pointers a game for his career, despite sometimes leading the league in makes/attempts and winning the 3 point contest 3 straight times.
I would never count out Larry Bird as not being able to do what Reggie/Ray/Steph have done in their eras. ESPECIALLY considering Bird grew up training himself to be a physical, in the paint player. Had he known as a child (like Steph) that the 3 point shot would be the most valuable shot in the NBA, he could have focused/practiced on making it the main part of his game. Who knows what his ceiling could have been in today's NBA.
I'll definitely agree with you that Curry should take even more per game if he could. Reggie/Ray
probably couldn't do what he's doing, but I'm not in favor of stats that ignore the context of era and make it seem like he's tiers above them.
