How do you build a young team with tons of promise?  Uh, well, acquire three straight #1 overall picks to build your team around.

To be fair, one of those #1s didn't contribute, isn't on the team anymore, and shouldn't have been a #1 pick to begin with.  And that was already known when they got him.  Bennett was more of a salary dump than an asset in that trade.

Yeah, true.  I think they probably at least had some hope that Bennett would turn into a contributor if nothing else.  But like, you put three straight #1 picks on a team and you'll probably end up with at least one superstar to build around.  The numbers are actually in your favor when you're working with those odds.
You’ll have to excuse my lengthiness—the reason I dread writing letters is because I am so apt to get to slinging wisdom & forget to let up. Thus much precious time is lost.

Towns = MVP caliber prospect
Wiggins = Paul George level prospect

No disrespect meant to Paul George (I'd take him on the Celtics any day), but Wiggins at 20 is performing like George at 22.  If he only improves a little, maybe he'll peak at Paul George, but again, he's 20, and has ton of growth ahead of him, both in terms of skill as well as just physically.

Wiggins at 20 is performing like George at 22 on offense. That year, George was 2nd team all-defense behind peak Lebron.

Wiggins is also a strong defender with a huge upside, but he isn't consistently playing defense at the level Paul George did at 22.

There is no doubt that Wiggins was further ahead at a younger age, and that's why he was a #1 draft choice, but in the NBA, there are quite a few nice players scoring 16-17 pts a game. Each step above that is hard, and quite a few talented guys don't continue to evolve past that. My guess is that Paul George will score about 25 pts per game and be an all-NBA defender this year. Wiggins could become that good, or even be better, but that is several levels of improvement from where he is now. Most guys never make that kind of leap.
