got pneumonia in hospital and couldn't recover.

Just really sucks. A great basketball mind and role model. One of the hardest working guys in the NBA.

Anyone who gets that much respect from KG and Doc Rivers is a beast imo.

RIP Flippy.
Hopefully he gets to see Wiggins and Towns win a few ship's from his chair in the sky.

This is heartbreaking.  No one ever had a bad thing to say about Flip.  I often listened to him when he was on the radio around here, and he always came off as a such a genuine person.

Very sad news.

That post from KG is one of the saddest and yet most heart-warming things I've ever seen.  Hard to see that and not feel saddened for him and everybody around him.

Almost a storybook ending for him to spend his last year around KG.  I'm sure that would have been comforting for him having a close friend around, given all he would have been going through.

Rest in peace.

Sounds like it was pneumonia.  I'm no doctor, but I'm sure his immune system was wrecked by all the chemo and/or radiation treatments he had went through.

Sad news

My heart goes out to the most important people in his life, his wife and four children.

Yeah it's often not literally the cancer that kills you, but the cancer (and the treatment) puts you in such a vulnerable state that something you'd normally be able to fight off finishes you off.  Very very common.  Grandfather went more or less the same way.

Turns out that Flip slipped into a coma after contracting pneumonia almost six weeks ago -- roughly around the time the initial announcement was made that he'd be stepping aside. Got to think the team and his family knew this day was coming, given all of the reports that came out since then. How sad.
