"Timberwolves coach and president Flip Saunders dies at age of 60 after battling cancer."

I just got this news from the ESPN app. Very sad news and a sad day for the NBA all around.

RIP Flip

Very sad.  Press release from the Timberwolves:

Quote
It is with extreme sadness that the Minnesota Timberwolves today learned that Phil "Flip" Saunders, who served as the team's President of Basketball Operations and Head Coach, in addition to being a minority owner of the team, passed away today at age 60.

The organization will follow up with more information as it becomes available.

So sad.  He was a Celtic at one time and also Detroit coach when I followed the Pistons.  Rip.

That sucks. Always liked Flip Saunders.

Ran some pretty offenses back in Minnesota and in Detroit. Never a great coach but a good one whose teams played some attractive stuff.

I'm shocked. And very sad for his loved ones.
There are two kinds of people: those who say to God, 'Thy will be done,' and those to whom God says, 'All right, then, have it your way.'

You don't have a soul. You are a Soul. You have a body.

Don't know much about the man, but I have to say that the recent work he did with the Timberwolves has set them up for potentially an elite future.

Off the top of my head:

Trading Trey burke for Shabazz muhammad and Gorgui Dieng... Seems like a win

Drafting Zach LaVine seems like a win.

Moving an all-star on the final year of his contract (Kevin Love) for a rookie #1 pick superstar prospect (Andrew Wiggins) was absolutely unprecedented.  That just doesn't happen normally.  It happened partially, because LeBron James... but also because Flip stubbornly refused to take anything less than Wiggins.

He put that team in a position that last year was purely developmental yet they kept things on the up-and-up... and ended up landing another phenom prospect in Karl Anthony-Towns.

There's no team in the league with a potentially brighter future.   If they win a title some day, Flip deserves a lot of the credit.
