Obviously Jones looks like he's on the outside looking in. However, what caught my eye was the "potential trade" comment. Surely, Jones has little to no value right now. So what if possible trade(s) being explored involved Sullinger and/or Turner with Jones attached to it?
Sullinger has quickly plummeted down the depth chart and finds himself behind Lee, Zeller, Johnson, and Olynyk in the rotation. Plus, Jerebko looks like a much better fit and plays the 4/3 and Crowder often slides up to the 4 when we go small.
Turner has played well for us, but I would love to be able to get Hunter as part of our rotation as a backup 2 and use his shooting ability to space the floor for Thomas to create havoc with Johnson in PNR's on the second unit.
One option that quickly comes to mind, that could be beneficial to both teams, is Sullinger and Jones for Terrance Ross.
http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/celtics_nba/boston_celtics/2015/10/celtics_notebook_jones_might_be_odd_man_outThe Celtics are heading down the home stretch in terms of their roster, and, according to Danny Ainge, the questions will be answered by this weekend.
The club has to be down to the maximum of 15 players by Monday in advance of the Oct. 28 regular-season opener, and currently there are 16 guaranteed contracts on the roster. In addition, there are four training-camp players who likely will be headed to the team’s D-League affiliate in Maine.
“I’ll visit with (coach) Brad (Stevens) sometime this week to discuss it,” said Ainge, the team president, before last night’s preseason game against the Nets. “We’ll decide by Saturday.”
Perry Jones is still looking like the odd man out among those with guaranteed deals, though it’s certain the Celts will be looking at potential trades this week to loosen their roster logjam through means other than a cut.
Coty Clarke, Malcolm Miller, Levi Randolph and Corey Walden all should have a chance to play for Maine.
“We’ve used our players in practices and drill work, and they all have helped the Celtics in training camp,” said Ainge, who, like Stevens, appreciates the relationship with the Red Claws.
“I love it,” he said. “It’s great. We feel like we have a great owner there (William Ryan) and a terrific coach (Scott Morrison), and we have a great relationship with them. Last year we had the best record in the D-League, and it was beneficial to James (Young) to go down there and play. Hopefully we’re staying healthy up here, and some of our young guys can get some experience down there again this year.”
Said Stevens, “There’s familiarity between teammates, systems. You can send a guy down at 11 o’clock in the morning to play a 7 o’clock game, and they don’t have a huge learning curve. I really like our D-League setup and our coaches and everybody else. It’s a really good situation.”
